Tourism in Lenggries faces major challenges, such as the issues of public transport and visitor management. Recently the number of holiday guests has fallen.

Lenggries – The work of the Lenggries Tourist Information (TI) has changed significantly in recent years. “It is important that tourism continues to develop and that we prepare for the future,” said tourism boss Maria Bader at the meeting of the IHK regional committee in the Lenggries town hall, in which she gave a keynote speech.

Tourism in Lenggries: Winter hiking is very popular

“We are clearly a tourism region – in summer and winter,” emphasized Bader and gave some figures. There are currently around 180 hosts with 2,500 guest beds. 80 percent of them are privately rented. “That’s what makes Lenggries so authentic and what sets the place apart.” In addition to the three hotels, the campsite is “incredibly valuable” for the community, says the TI boss: “Camping is becoming more and more popular.” Winter hiking is also very popular. People are particularly happy about the 18 managed mountain huts, which are mainly located around Brauneck. There are also 15 pubs and restaurants in the municipality.

Bader also had the overnight stay figures ready. There was a steady increase from 2013 to 2019 before Corona came. “We have recovered from that,” the TI boss made clear. In 2023, however, there was a significant decline of 14 percent in guest arrivals. This can be attributed to several reasons. On the one hand, the Brauneck Hotel is closed and is scheduled to reopen in 2025. Another reason is the increased cost of living. “We are already noticing that people are starting to save,” observes Bader. This hits Lenggries particularly hard because the community is a destination for second or third vacations.

Lenggries wants to win new target groups

“The winters haven’t been so good the last two years, we’ve noticed that,” added the 27-year-old. “It is all the more important that we create new offers so that we have tourism all year round and increase occupancy again.” To achieve this, the municipality wants to address and win new target groups beyond the current visitor clientele. One can observe that the younger generation places more value on sustainability and is more nature-conscious.

An “important topic” for the tourist information center is digitalization, emphasized Bader. A digital guest directory was introduced during Corona. The challenge: “How do we get the right information to the right guest at the right time?” A new data platform that was introduced in 2021 was also a “huge relief” in minimizing errors. A new website has also been created. Lenggries benefits from tourism, Bader emphasized. In 2019, sales totaled 3.1 million euros. In addition, there is tax revenue of five million euros. “A not inconsiderable sum.”

Mobility and public transport are the biggest challenges

Nevertheless, there are also some challenges. The biggest one: mobility. “More and more people want to come by train, many people no longer have a car,” says Bader. But the southern part of Lenggries in particular has “relatively poor” public transport connections. In addition, the flow of visitors must be “directed sensibly”. To this end, the TI actively maintains the excursion sticker. In addition, holiday guests need to be made more aware of nature conservation and consideration. “Many people don’t know how to behave in nature,” says Bader. Another point that shows how their work has changed: “We are no longer just responsible for the guests, but also for protecting the living space.”
