Spring is usually a time of falling unemployment rates. This is due, among other things, to the fact that employees are needed in gastronomy and tourism. What is it like in Schleswig-Holstein?

Kiel - The spring revival has hit the job market in Schleswig-Holstein. In March, around 93,200 people were unemployed in the northernmost federal state. That was 2,300 fewer than in February, as the Federal Employment Agency announced on Thursday. The unemployment rate fell by 0.2 points to 5.8 percent. A year ago the rate was 5.6 percent. Compared to the previous year, 4,700 more women and men in Schleswig-Holstein were registered as unemployed this March. For the statistics, the Federal Agency used data that was available up to March 13th.

“Despite the overall political and economic challenges, the labor market remains in a stable condition,” said the head of the Northern Regional Directorate of the Federal Employment Agency, Markus Biercher, commenting on the figures. This can be seen in the number of 6,200 unemployment reports, which were lower than in the first two months of the year. In the current month, companies hired a total of 6,900 new employees who were previously unemployed. Compared to the previous month, this is an increase of 2,000 or 29.5 percent. The number of jobs subject to social security contributions available is 25,500, which is at the same level as in previous months.

Given the demographic change, the need for well-qualified workers and skilled workers remains high across all sectors. The economic sectors of technical and economic services, health and social services, but also trade and manufacturing alone were looking for more than 18,300 new employees, says Biercher. According to the information, the number of employees subject to social security contributions (as of January) is 1,049,600 and is 9,300 higher compared to the previous year.

Stormarn has the lowest unemployment rate in the district at 4.2 percent, and Dithmarschen has the highest at 6.4 percent. Among the independent cities, Kiel has the lowest rate at 7.8 percent. At 8.9 percent, Neumünster has the highest unemployment in Schleswig-Holstein.

Schleswig-Holstein's Labor State Secretary Tobias von der Heide (CDU) expressed his satisfaction: "Unemployment fell compared to the previous month, particularly in the group of older unemployed people aged 50 and over and unemployed people without German citizenship."

He welcomed the fact that with the entry into force of the next stage of the Skilled Immigration Act on March 1st, rapid integration for the urgently needed skilled workers and workers from abroad will be made easier. “Shortened and less bureaucratic procedures for the recognition of professional and university qualifications are overdue steps in order to quickly address the acute shortage of skilled workers. Family reunification, which is so important for successful integration, is also easier for certain foreign skilled workers.” dpa
