Great sadness for Fritz Wepper. Numerous companions are deeply affected by the Munich actor's death.
Munich – The successful ZDF crime series “Derrick” was launched in October 1974. To date, the cult series with the hook “Harry, get the car” has been broadcast in 102 countries. The actor of the crime thriller hero Harry Klein has since died. Fritz Wepper also died on March 25th at the age of 82 - and not only the series fans mourn the celebrity, but also many of his colleagues.
Acting legend Fritz Wepper: TV colleagues mourn the “Derrick” star
On March 25, 2024, the Munich native died in a hospice in Upper Bavaria. Now the first emotional reactions have been published. Director Ulrich König (74) said in an interview with BR: “For me, he was one of the best actors I have ever worked with.” And Ronja Forcher (27), known from “Der Bergdoktor”, also said goodbye to her TV colleague. She wrote on Instagram: “Dear Fritz! Bon Voyage! Rest in peace. It was very nice to work with you.” Hans Sigl (54), also known from “Der Bergdoktor”, also said goodbye. He wrote on Instagram: “Have a good trip. Thank you for your art.”
His “Um Himmels Wilen” colleagues also said goodbye to Fritz Wepper. Emanuela von Frankenberg (63) posted a video on Instagram to say goodbye to Webber. She captioned the clip: “Thanks big guy! For the incredibly rich time, in front of and behind the camera!” And Janina Hartwig (62) also wrote under a musical video clip: “My dear Fritz, look - I found this shaky recording of a shoot in my recordings. We sing 'My way' by Frank Sinatra in a lyrically modified form. We had so many days of filming together, we had so many conversations. We have been through so many highs and some lows together. I thank you for everything. With you we are all losing a great people’s actor.”
How did Fritz Wepper die?
Fritz Wepper was a German actor and voice actor. At the end of 2023, Fritz Wepper was diagnosed with blood poisoning (sepsis) and was admitted to a clinic. He initially appeared to be recovering, but in early 2024 he was transferred to a hospice where he received palliative care. He died in March 2024 after a stay in a hospice in Upper Bavaria.
The last years of his life were marked by health problems. In 2021, he was diagnosed with skin cancer that had already metastasized. A tumor in his abdomen was later surgically removed. He was also hospitalized for over a year in 2021 due to COVID-19 illness.
The world is mourning: fans say goodbye to Fritz Wepper
His fans also said goodbye to Wepper. One X user wrote: “Harry can’t get the car anymore. Rest in peace, Fritz Wepper,” alluding to a popular hook from “Derrick.” However, this sentence is said not to have been used in any episode of the series. There was also great sadness abroad. Numerous series lovers from Italy, the Netherlands and Spain, among others, said goodbye to the cult actor.

Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (57, CSU) also expressed his condolences. He was “deeply affected” by Wepper’s death, as he explained on X. And added: “Fritz Wepper, like his brother Elmar, was a Bavarian actor in the best sense of the word. He knew how to authentically embody our homeland in film and television. His impressive presence on screen and television was unparalleled. Our condolences go out to his family. Bavaria will always honor his memory.”

After his death, even the ARD and BR changed their holiday programs in honor of Fritz Wepper. The actor will be seen again in his most successful roles over Easter. (au)
