Crime series on public broadcasters' evening programs are very popular. Now a format has to give way: the “Rentnercops” with Bill Mockridge and Hartmut Volle.
Cologne – The plot of the ARD crime series “Rentnercops” is as simple as it is funny: Because the Cologne police are suffering from a personnel shortage, they are actually bringing retired investigators back into service. Now inspectors Reinhard Bielefelder (Bill Mockridge, 76) and Klaus Schmitz (Hartmut Volle, 70) are retiring again - but this time in real life. Because the series is canceled.
ARD sends “Rentnercops” into retirement – main actor Bill Mockridge thinks it’s “a shame”
Filming for the final, 7th season began in autumn 2023, which will consist of another six episodes. These have been broadcast on Das Erste since March 27th on Wednesdays - after that it's finally over: ARD and the production company Bavaria Fiction are now surprisingly sending the "Rentnercops" into retirement. How is this decision received by the main actors?
“I think it's a shame that the 'retired cops' are retiring,” explains Bill Mockridge
at

His actor colleague and series partner Hartmut Volle is also wistful: “I would have really wanted to investigate further. The spectators were always with us. It's a little sad and a shame, this end for the 'retired cops'."

“Rentnercops” is over – producer Peter Güde explains the background
However, the end of “Rentnercops” is not due to poor ratings: an average of 2.2 million viewers recently watched the series – not a bad figure. In an interview with
quotenmeter.de
, producer Peter Güde gives other reasons: “For us this always meant: The 'retired cops', who are actually retired, are brought back at short notice before they finally retire. But the fact that this is only the case after over 10 years and more than 80 episodes is quite a success story. We stop when it’s best.”

The ARD sister channel ZDF also impresses with popular crime series. There is now a real TV hit: The “Rosenheim Cops” secure a young Munich star.
