The spring recovery is causing the number of unemployed people in MV to fall slightly. The unemployment rate is 8.3 percent. That's only enough for third-to-last place in the country comparison.
Kiel/Schwerin - Spring awakening on the labor market in the tourist region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: The number of unemployed fell by 2,400 or 3.5 percent in March compared to February to around 68,000. The unemployment rate fell by 0.3 points to 8.3 percent, as the Northern Regional Directorate of the Federal Employment Agency announced in Kiel on Thursday. A year ago the rate was 8.2 percent.
However, the situation in MV is anything but rosy compared to the rest of the country: only Berlin (9.6 percent) and Bremen (11 percent) had higher unemployment in March. However, individual regions in the northeast can keep up. The unemployment rate in the districts of Ludwigslust-Parchim and Rostock, at 6.3 percent each, almost reached the value for Germany, which was given as 6 percent. For the statistics, the Federal Agency used data that was available up to March 13th.
Data from the Stralsund employment agency shows how important a role tourism plays in the northeast. The number of unemployed there fell by 7.5 percent from February to March - the largest decline of all regions in MV, as deputy agency boss Dirk Hausweiler calculated. “It is the Easter business in the tourism regions that gives us this pleasing development,” he said. The agency district includes the top destination Rügen. The rate is still above average 10.1 percent. But Hausweiler expects a further, significantly greater decline in unemployment in April. “Our experts in the regions tell us that a large part of the upcoming recruitment in the tourism industry will not take place until the beginning of April.”
Unemployment has fallen more sharply in MV than in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, said the head of the Northern Regional Directorate, Markus Biercher, to the German Press Agency. The labor market in MV remains robust despite the economic weakness. “This is reflected in the fact that there were 3,700 fewer unemployment claims in the current month. In the previous month there were 4,400 and in January there were 7,000, significantly more." However, the demand for personnel has slowed down: In March, there were 16,750 open jobs available to job seekers in MV, 2,000 or 10.8 percent fewer than in March 2023. Employment subject to social security contributions fell by 0.5 percent (as of January).
Biercher referred to successes in mediating Ukrainian war refugees. According to him, the number of Ukrainians registered as unemployed fell by 3.5 percent compared to March 2023. The Schwerin Ministry of Economic Affairs sees good opportunities for them in tourism, where employees are needed. State Secretary Ines Jesse referred to an online information event organized by the state tourism association on April 10th to recruit international employees and refugees for the industry. dpa
