Summer time 2024 will go into effect on the night between March 28 and 29, between Thursday and Friday. At 2:00 in the morning we will move the hands of the clock forward one hour - which will cause us to lose an hour of sleep - however, we will gain an hour of daylight. Daylight saving time will end on October 27, 2024, the night between Saturday and Sunday, when winter time will begin.

Why is there summer time and winter time?

The Time Setting Law from 2013 states that every year, on the last Friday of March, the clock is moved forward one hour to "summer time" - and it is one of the two times that are commonly used in Israel. Also, on the last Sunday in October, the clock in Israel is moved back one hour. This time is called "winter time".

The Time Determination Law, in the State of Israel time is determined at the National Physics Laboratory in the Ministry of Economy and Industry, with the help of a system of four atomic clocks, which mark the national time as UTC(INPL), Israel's Coordinated Universal Time.

Many know that the change of seasons is a result of the earth's orbit around the sun, but few know that the cause of the seasonal changes is not the changing distance from the sun, but rather the angle of the earth's inclination in relation to it. This affects the degree of intensity and the duration in which the sun's rays hit different parts of the globe.

Where are you moving? Daylight saving time - forward or backward?

As mentioned, on the night between March 28 and 29, between Thursday and Friday - at 2:00 in the morning, Israel will switch to summer time and accordingly, we will move the hands of the clock forward one hour. Moving the clock will cause us to lose an hour of darkness and gain an hour of light.

The main purpose of moving the clock in its origin was to move one hour from the beginning of the day to the end. That is, to make it so that instead of the sun rising early in the morning - the sun will set an hour later. The assumption is that the addition of a daylight hour reduces energy consumption, because the sun shines until a later hour, reduces traffic accidents and even has health benefits.

Daylight saving time in Europe and the USA - what is happening in the world?

Every country has a national local time, according to which the residents of the country live and everything in the country is done according to this time. Local time in each country is related and defined by the geographical location of the country on Earth. The earth is divided into 24 time zones, so the width of each zone is about 1,500 km, and within this zone there is the same local time. The counting of time zones starts at the zero degree longitude located in the small town of Greenwich near London. The world time is UTC According to the Greenwich longitude.

In any area that is east of Greenwich, the local time is ahead of the UTC world time by a number of hours equal to the number of the area. For example, Europe is in zone number 1 therefore the local time in European countries is UTC + 1. The State of Israel is in zone number 2 , therefore our local time is UTC + 2. In any area west of Greenwich, the local time lags behind the UTC time. For example, the local time in New York lags relative to the world time by five hours and is UTC - 5.

Many countries in Asia, Africa and South America have already stopped moving the hands of the clock in summer and winter. The European Parliament also voted in 2019 and stated that the countries will be allowed to decide whether to cancel the transition from summer time to winter time - and will be able to stay in their time zone all year round. The issue has also come up in the US many times, in 2022, a majority in the Senate voted to cancel the switch.

Daylight saving time in the US runs from March 10th to November 3rd. In Germany, France, Italy and most European countries - summer time starts on March 31 and ends on October 27.

How do you set summer time on a smartphone?

Most of us do enjoy an automatic update of the clock on our mobile phone according to our time zone, but those who are not 100% sure that the update for summer time will enter their mobile phone, can update the time manually. Still worried that the device won't wake you up in the morning? This is what you should do.

In addition to this, cellular networks suggest backing up important calendar events on smartphones, because there may be disruptions in notifications (a notification for an 8:00 a.m. meeting will go off at 9:00 a.m., etc.). During the day when we switch to summer time, it will be possible to return the automatic update without fear. Whether you have an iPhone or an Android device, this is how you can move the time on your smartphone.

Android

Enter the Settings menu and look for the "Date and Time" option in the list. After you have entered it, cancel the "Automatic Date and Time" option. Select the correct time zone and then the desired time.

Since there are quite a few different types of the Android operating system and countless versions, the menus may differ slightly from each other. If you can't find the update date and time menu, it's probably hidden inside another menu. Look for "more options" in the menu and you will probably find what you are looking for there.

iPhone

To manually update the time in the iOS operating system, go to the Settings menu and select the "General" option. Now, from the displayed options, click on "Date & Time" and turn off the "Set Automatically" switch. Now choose the correct time zone and manually set the desired time.

And what about the entrance of Shabbat during summer time?

Daylight saving time in Israel has become a subject of controversy between the secular public and the religious public - who are opposed to canceling the switch to permanent daylight saving time. In the summer time, the entrance of Shabbat will be later - and so will its departure. The religious opposition stems, as much as pleasure, from a variety of reasons related to Jewish law, including the increased desecration of the Sabbath.

In the summer months, Shabbat starts after 20:00 in the evening, and this may increase the desecration of Shabbat. In some cities, public services, including public transportation, resume operation before Shabbat ends.
