Fewer and less serious accidents
.
Two years after Lyon's entry into the Ville 30 system, the environmental executive welcomed the drop in accidents this Thursday. Between 2019 and 2023, injury accidents decreased by 35% in Lyon, according to the national interministerial road safety observatory. A faster decline than in the rest of the metropolitan territory (-21%).
This trend is even more marked for pedestrians, with a 43% reduction in accidents involving them. As for cyclists, the number of accidents continues to fall (-18% between 2022 and 2023) despite a strong increase in bicycle use.
“
This demonstrates that it is indeed the combination of reducing speed and the development of public space which makes it possible to obtain effective results,”
reacted the mayor of the city, Grégory Doucet (EELV), highlighting the 39% drop in serious accidents.
“Lowering the speed has made it possible to reduce the number of accidents and their severity,”
insists Bruno Bernard (EELV), president of the Lyon metropolitan area. Several municipalities in the community have joined this system proposed by Greater Lyon, despite different political colors. This is the case of Oullins, Couzon-au-Mont-d'Or, Poleymieux-au-Mont-d'Or and very recently Givors.
In these cities, the 30 km/h limit has become the norm and 50 km/h the exception. Exception which remains in force, particularly on certain main boulevards in Lyon.
“In 2024, more than 60% of Greater Lyon residents live in a municipality”
in City 30, the Lyon metropolis welcomes again.
