Instead of an experienced singer like Maite Kelly, a newcomer, Isaak, will be taking part in the ESC final in Malmö. Maite Kelly herself reveals what she thinks about taking part.
Berlin – On May 11, 2024, the TV nation is excited again and hopes for a decent result for Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), after previous years had ended with embarrassing bottom places. Newcomer Isaak Guderian (29) will go to Malmö. When asked about the topic, pop singer Maite Kelly (44) explains why she has not yet entered the music competition as a candidate.
Maite Kelly sees the ESC more as a platform for newcomers
In Germany, the name Kelly stands for musical talent, filled concert halls and successful hits. Whether Paddy (46), Angelo (42), Maite or Jimmy (53) – they have all left a catchy tune in your head. Songwriting and producing is also in the siblings’ blood. It makes sense to send a member of the musician family to the ESC final in order to lead Germany to victory again in a country comparison after years. When asked whether she would take on this part, singer Maite Kelly said in an interview with

magazine : “This is a platform that I have to keep open to younger artists. I’m 44 years old now.”

further quotes from the interview, the Berlin-born artist wanted to give newcomers priority for such an opportunity: “I am now one of the established singers that I can count myself among. I'm blessed, especially since it was particularly difficult as a woman - especially after Corona." Things are currently going great for the artist again. She has just released her new album “Only Love” after three years. In February 2024 she won the GEMA “German Music Authors Prize” in the hit category. Alongside show stars like Roland Kaiser (71), Maite Kelly asserts herself as a celebrated duet partner.
Maite Kelly on ESC participation: “You should never be greedy”
She is very grateful for all of this, which is why she lives by the maxim “one should never become greedy”. As she reveals, the Kelly Family as a group has already received a request to participate in the ESC in the past. At the time she was against it and even now she has in the back of her mind that someone else deserves it more. Regarding

, Kelly says: “I wouldn’t have a good feeling about it. I would have the feeling that I was [taking away] the place from someone who needs it much more.” She is sure that many established artists would only take part for marketing purposes and at the request of their record company.

The German hope now lies in the still relatively new singer Isaak Guderian from Minden. On February 16, 2024, he won against eight competitors in a special broadcast with his title “Always on the run”. Among them were Max Mutzke (42), who took 8th place at the ESC in 2004, and Marie Reim (23), daughter of pop stars Michelle (52) and Mathias Reim (66). Isaak Guderian, who also has Icelandic roots, will represent Germany in the final in Malmö, Sweden on May 11th and compete against 25 other nations.
