The Unterallgäu district fire councilor and association chairman Alexander Möbus was able to take a very satisfactory look back at the year 2023 at the spring service meeting last week.

Westerheim/Unterallgäu – In front of the approximately 300 firefighters, mostly commanders and their deputies, who came to the multi-purpose hall, Möbus was even able to mention a slight increase in the number of active firefighters in Unterallgäu. A total of 5,598 people aged 18 and over work on a voluntary basis in the district to protect the population.

Last year there were 128 volunteer fire departments and one company fire department in Unterallgäu. However, Alexander Möbus also regretted that the fire department in Wineden had to be disbanded in 2023 because, among other things, no commander could be found.

With a total of 41 youth fire departments, the Unterallgäu fire departments have no problems with recruiting young people, unlike other districts. There are also five children's fire brigades with 66 children. Westerheim's mayor and host Christa Bail was even able to report in her welcoming speech that the local fire department was well attended. The commanders always manage to get the young people excited about the joint task.

Over 40 percent more missions

The tasks and operations of the fire brigades will not have decreased in 2023. With a total of 2,864 missions, the fire departments in the district even had over 40 percent more calls than in the previous year. The classic fire operations only accounted for around a sixth at 469; the lion's share of 1,550, or over half of the operations, was due to “technical assistance”. 351 false alarms were counted, which unfortunately also included 159 false alarms. A total of 172 people were rescued during the operations and 188 people received primary medical care. However, any help came too late for 43 people. “Even if this was a completely normal year,” said the district fire council, “these numbers cannot convey the human suffering behind every operation.” This also applies to the firefighters, whom he encouraged to take advantage of psychosocial emergency care take. It is not a sign of weakness not to get back to business as usual immediately after returning from deployment.

News about the departments

The women's work department is not yet staffed at the district level. At least 327 women are active in the fire departments themselves, and there are an additional 90 girls in the youth fire departments. The women's representative, who is still being sought, should, in addition to exchanging ideas and networking with the women's representatives at state and district level, continue to encourage women and win them over to the armed forces. The fire brigades in the Unterallgäu district are often purely male comrades. Therefore, advising the male commanders is one of the tasks that can make the start easier for the newly arrived women.

Peter Drexel was appointed to the information and communication department at district and district level. He emphasized the diversity of professional experiences available in the local fire departments as a particular strength in being able to support and develop each other.

The most beautiful present

District fire officer Möbus would like to thank all firefighters for their good cooperation and their commitment to serving the public with the words: “The best gift to someone is time. We are giving away our lifetime to society.”
