There is no question: Roland Kaiser has already achieved a lot in his life. However, there is one thing that the popular pop star regrets in retrospect.
Berlin – What would the hit scene be without Roland Kaiser (71)? The singer became famous in 1980 with the song “Santa Maria,” which sold 1.2 million copies. This gave him his big breakthrough and has since released countless other hits. Even at over 70 years old, the exceptional artist is not slowing down. His “Kaisermania” concerts attract large numbers of people every year. In 2024, the pop star will also celebrate his 50th stage anniversary and will go on a big open-air tour in the summer. However, there is one thing that the pop star regrets to this day.
Roland Kaiser wouldn't do that again
Given his remarkable career, one can only wonder: Is there anything Roland Kaiser would do differently today? The singer answers this question in the podcast “Polaks Schlagertalk”. In a conversation with Oliver Polak (47), the 71-year-old finds clear words.
“That I smoked,” is Roland Kaiser’s answer. But how long did the pop star smoke? "Too long. From the age of 18 until the diagnosis of my illness. That was in 2000,” reports the musician in the podcast. Roland Kaiser suffers from the chronic lung disease COPD, in which the airways narrow.

After initially keeping his diagnosis a secret, the singer retired from show business in 2009 to focus on his recovery. In 2010, Kaiser underwent a lung transplant and returned to the stage that same year. Looking back, the pop star wishes he had never resorted to glowing sticks. Apart from his nicotine addiction back then, there is nothing that Roland Kaiser regrets today: “That’s the only thing.”

According to his own statements, the Berliner has not yet dealt with the topic of death in detail. “By will, yes, and by living will, yes, but otherwise not every day, no,” he reveals. Despite his lung disease, Kaiser is a “merciless optimist.” Thanks to this quality, the 71-year-old continues to give full throttle even in old age. The pop star celebrated his stage anniversary on February 24th as part of the ZDF show “Giovanni Zarrella presents: 50 years of Roland Kaiser”
