This week in the Assembly, it was the Lépine competition for societal law. Two legislative proposals have been presented which demonstrate the insatiable appetite of French parliamentarians for the extension of the domain of the welfare state, like space black holes doomed to grow infinitely.
The first provided menstrual leave for women suffering from painful periods. Of women or “LGBTIQ+ people”, specified the explanatory memorandum, because it would not be a question of lacking inclusiveness.
The second, which was voted on Thursday, is the law establishing a new offense of “hair discrimination”. The MP initiating the initiative spoke of the fate of “black women who feel obliged to straighten their hair”, “red-headed people, victims of many negative prejudices”, or “bald men”.
Obviously, these two proposals start from good intentions. But they reveal an addictive relationship with the State, invoked to repair the slightest inconvenience...
