"Andrea's story is like that of Jesus Christ, who died innocent and mocked for his passion for outdoor activities. For us, between the malice reported on social media and unmotivated slander, it is a continuous via crucis. Now we don't ask only that justice be done, but we demand it." Carlo Papi, the father of the 26-year-old boy killed on 5 April 2023 by the Jj4 bear in the woods above the town of Caldes, in Trentino, told ANSA.
Speaking almost a year after the tragedy that shocked the local community and started the tug-of-war between the provincial administration and animal rights associations over the management of large carnivores, Papi once again insists on the need to identify those responsible for what happened. "We still don't know anything about the investigation by the Trento Prosecutor's Office, but we have full faith in the work of the judiciary. We hope that something moves, because a young man of 26 years old, in good health, full of energy and plans for the future cannot die like this. Andrea was abandoned by the institutions that were supposed to protect him", Papi specified.
A mass in memory of him is planned for April 5th, exactly one year after the 26-year-old's death (at the parish church of Caldes, 8pm). The following day, again at 8pm, the informal group "Proudly Trentini" organized a torchlight procession through the streets of the town.
