Singer Leony will sing the official anthem for the European Football Championship together with One Republic and Meduza - but for this she will be attacked online.
Berlin – For days now, sport has no longer been the only focus in view of the approaching European Football Championship. Above all, the music surrounding the event is being wildly discussed. Many fans want the song “Major Tom” to be the official goal anthem at the German national team’s games. But it is most likely that no random song will be played at the tournament, but rather the official European Championship anthem. It comes from One Republic, Meduza and the German singer Leony (26). This is now reacting to the hurtful criticism.
Because she contributes the EM song: Singer Leony is treated with hostility and insults
Cologne-born Kim Petras (31) was actually supposed to sing the song for the 2024 European Championships - but she backed out shortly beforehand. Those responsible quickly found a replacement in DSDS juror Leony. The young artist will contribute the official anthem together with the band One Republic and the Italian EDM group Meduza. But Leony's joy about this big project is clouded - many football fans go to the barricades.

story, the 26-year-old shares some messages that have been reaching her almost continuously since her involvement in the EM song became known. “We don’t want you”, “Why do you take such an old lady?”, “Who is that and why is that thing allowed to sing there?” – the singer has been confronted with such hurtful comments for days. Users on the internet are not afraid to throw around nasty insults and do everything they can to prevent Leony from contributing to a song. But they did the calculations without the musician - she is strong and shoots against her haters.

Bad insults online: Leony reacts to EM song criticism
In a video on her social media channel, Leony comments on the nasty comments. “How a 20-second goal anthem and a three-minute song can trigger so much hatred in people is a mystery to me,” she captioned the post. The singer is disappointed that she was not given the big opportunity and that her mood was being ruined. “There are a few things that you fundamentally don’t understand and I’ll try to explain them to you,” she begins a statement aimed directly at her haters.

“Firstly, EM = European Championship, not German Championship. Many, many other countries will take part in this tournament [...] Why should the official song of this entire tournament, the entire European Championship, be in German?" she asks, responding to the criticism that her song is in English language will be. Secondly, she is particularly hostile because the fans' request to make “Major Tom” the goal anthem is not heard by the DFB. “I can’t help it, guys. “It wasn’t my decision as to which song would be the goal anthem,” Leony clarifies.
Luckily, the “Remedy” interpreter also receives a lot of encouragement and support from her fans. “I read every single comment and appreciate each and every one of you so much for being happy with me,” she writes in her story. She will not let the “Internet Rambos” get her down. Another star is also currently taking action against disgusting comments online: Ruth Moschner (47) is even addressing politicians about harassment.
