Many people in Germany complain about suffering from health problems after the time change. Nevertheless, summer time is approaching on Easter weekend.

Munich – The short winter days seem to be over: soon the clock will officially strike summer time again. Over Easter, the time is changed and “an hour is stolen” from people in the EU. Whether the clock needs to be set back or forward an hour can be remembered using mnemonics.

Forward or back? The time change is coming at Easter

Some people have trouble remembering whether the clock needs to be set one hour forward or back when changing from winter to summer time. In a survey by the polling institute YouGov, only 72 percent of those surveyed said that the clock needed to be set forward one hour. Twelve percent thought the clock needed to be turned back, twelve percent were unsure, and the rest abstained. The majority of those surveyed were right: the clock is turned forward one hour on Easter Sunday.

Specifically, the time change will take place in the early hours of the morning from Saturday (March 30, 2024) to Sunday; However, most digital clocks automatically advance the hands from two to three o'clock. Everyone else then has to manually set their clock forward one hour. Central European summer time will then apply again throughout the EU. This means it stays light much longer in the evening than before. To remember whether the clock needs to be set back or forward an hour, there are a few mnemonics that make it easier.

Some mnemonics to help with the change from winter to summer time

  • Probably the easiest way to remember: Garden furniture is placed

    outside

the door in summer - for example on the terrace or balcony. In winter the furniture is put

    back

    inside

    .

  • The way the time change works is similar to a thermometer: the temperatures are plus in summer (=turn the hand forward), in winter they are minus (=turn the hand back).

  • A very clever mnemonic also exists in the English language: In Great Britain the following four words “spring forward, fall back” are known. This can be translated in two ways: “spring forward, fall back” or “jump forward, fall back.”

Health problems caused by the time change are increasing

In recent years there has been increased discussion about whether the time change should be abolished. In a representative Forsa survey commissioned by the health insurance company DAK-Gesundheit, 74 percent of those surveyed said that the time change was unnecessary. Only 23 percent think regular time changes make sense. One of the problems with the abolition is that the EU states would have to agree on whether only summer or winter time should apply.
