Russia conducts a military conscription twice a year, which usually includes a significant number of young citizens. Now a new phase begins.
MOSCOW - Russia is planning a new military conscription campaign to begin on April 1, according to its general staff. Vice Admiral Vladimir Tsimlyansky announced on Friday that the spring military enlistment campaign would begin at the beginning of the month. According to Zimlyanski, the new recruits will complete their one-year service exclusively on the territory of the Russian Federation and will not be sent to Ukraine.
Russia: New recruits not scheduled for deployment in contested areas
The vice admiral emphasized that the new soldiers will neither strengthen the positions of the armed forces in the annexed territories of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia nor take part in special military operations. He did not provide details about the exact number of Russian citizens aged 18 to 30 affected, but it is believed it could be in the tens of thousands.
Conscription campaigns in Russia since the beginning of the Ukrainian War
Since autumn 2022, Russia had mobilized around 300,000 reservists due to its offensive in Ukraine. In 2023, around 147,000 men were affected by the spring campaign, while 130,000 conscripts joined the Russian army in the autumn campaign, according to the Defense Ministry.

Despite President Vladimir Putin's assurances that a new wave of mobilization is "not necessary," many Russians fear another conscription. Putin stated that 617,000 Russian soldiers are currently deployed in Ukraine as part of the offensive. Since January 1, 2024, citizens between the ages of 28 and 30 can now be called up for military service. Previously, the upper age limit was 27 years. This increase in the age limit gives Russia access to a larger number of potential recruits. (
