Sahara dust moved from the Alps to Bavaria on Saturday. According to meteorologists, this leads to cloudy skies - but also poses another risk.

Munich – A wild mix of weather dominates the Free State on the Easter weekend: sun and clouds alternate depending on the region and mild temperatures prevail. In the Alps, however, the red alert is currently in effect: above 1,500 meters, hurricane-like gusts occur at speeds between 80 and 105 km/h, and in exposed locations even hurricane-force gusts of up to 120 km/h. It will also remain stormy in the surrounding area at least until midnight on Saturday.

But as if all that wasn't enough, Sahara dust is currently spreading throughout Bavaria: According to the DWD report, it will significantly cloud the sky, at least on Saturday, March 30th. In addition, it can strain the respiratory tract in some people.

Sahara dust over Bavaria: cloudy skies on Saturday

According to qualified meteorologist Dominik Jung, it sometimes becomes “hazy, hazy” because the Saharan dust obscures the sunlight. In this way he could also “slow down the warming a little”. However, this did not detract from the mild temperatures on Easter Saturday: in Bavaria the thermometer climbed to up to 24 degrees in Regensburg and to 21 degrees in Munich and Nuremberg. According to the DWD report, it should still be mild on Easter Sunday: highs between 17 and 21 degrees are expected, on Easter Monday between 10 degrees in the Allgäu and 19 degrees in the Passauer Land.

However, there is another risk associated with Saharan dust: As Jung warns, it can “impair air quality by releasing fine dust particles into the air, which can be particularly problematic for people with respiratory diseases.” Saharan dust occurs in Germany particularly when the Winds in the Sahara are becoming stronger - this is particularly the case in spring and summer, and sometimes even at the beginning of the year.
