There, the trainees from the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forestry (AELF) completed their obligatory forestry competition, which was also the regional decision to qualify for the Bavarian Championships at the Goldberg Forestry School near Kehlheim. With great success, as head of the authority Christian Webert was pleased.

Written and practical test

The 29 students first took a written knowledge test with questions about forest law, pests, tasks of forest owners' associations and similar theoretical material before they went outside. For the first time not in the forest, but directly in front of the school, because they wanted to be present in the town and show what is taught here. Occasionally, passers-by looked over the shoulders of the examinees in the forecourt and orchard and were able to see for themselves how skilfully they handled planting tools such as saws.

Michael Laumer, agriculture education officer, and district forester Katharina Bauer also noted the important role of forestry in the Oberland when the first practical tasks were completed. The young people worked exceptionally safely and paid particular attention to precision and occupational safety, which was unanimous praise.

“It’s nice that more and more women are doing the training”

The most points were up for grabs at the felling station (100). Forestry master Thomas Hobmeier from Ebersberg showed why in detail at the trunk of the student, who had completed her exercise with a powerful “tree fall”. She had only used up a few centimeters of the half-meter tolerance at the intended target point, and the inspector was also full of praise in other respects: “No hesitation, took his time, worked cleanly,” he stated after, among other things, making the felling notch and adhering to it had evaluated safety fall technology.

At the Bavarian Championships, Michael Geiger from Bichl and Korbinian Kasper (Weßling) will represent the Oberland alongside Lena Schmidt (Peine in Lower Saxony), who with 433, 428 and 425 points were only slightly below the maximum of 440 points. Luisa Kuchlmaier (Gmund) and Martin Mayr (Kreuth) followed closely behind in fourth and fifth place.

There were “forestry-themed prizes” for everyone, which were provided by the Holzkirchen district office of the Bavarian Farmers' Association, the companies Stoib and Stang, the Holzkirchen and Wolfratshausen forest owners' associations, the Raiffeisenbank im Oberland and the BioGut Wallenburg. Next year, the practical test in the agricultural competition will be part of the curriculum for the trainees at the AELF.
