The community cooking crew has been caring for the children of the daycare centers in Haar for years, and now they are also taking over the school cafeteria and cooking for the two elementary schools and the middle school.

Haar - 50 kilos of pasta fall into the water, potatoes from huge sacks are peeled, yeast dough for 50 sheets of pizza is kneaded: The kitchen crew at the Kita Edith-Hecht-Straße in Haar is already in full operation at 8 a.m., while next door her little table guests are just taking off their jackets and putting on their slippers. The three of us are currently cooking for far more than just one facility: all community daycare centers receive fresh food delivered at lunchtime by building yard employees, according to a press release from the community. With the reopening of the Kita Sofienstrasse, there are now a total of nine houses - the kitchen became too small. But just a few meters further, on Casino Street, is the cooks' old place of work - here the stoves and ovens have now been reactivated by two additional kitchen workers. And another challenge lies ahead: the team is taking over the school kitchens.

Dissatisfaction with catering companies

It was the dissatisfaction with the catering companies that made the community of Haar decide to cook for their daycare centers themselves in 2013. The bold idea became a success story: Since then, the complaints have been practically zero, and in the kitchens there are painted thank-you pictures with lots of hearts for the cooks. It's important to them that the little ones enjoy their food - and that they bring good, healthy food to the table, regional and organic. Yes, this combination works, assures chef Francesca Marzocca.

For happiness: One pasta day per week

Every week there are dishes the children want on the menu, which some parents are surprised about. And every now and then a mom or dad knocks on the kitchen door to ask for recipes - because the offspring then insists on tomato sauce à la Francesca. Of course, there is also real “children’s food” steaming in the pots: for example, there is one pasta day every week to keep you happy. And if cakes or other sweet treats are on the daily menu, they are always homemade. Ripping open bags is absolutely frowned upon in the daycare kitchen. The bread is even baked here. “Many children have a long day at daycare, so the food has to taste good and be plentiful,” the team agrees. Everyone here practically always agrees, because that's the only way everything can be done. “We understand each other blindly,” says Marzocca.

That is probably also the reason why the kitchen group is now taking on another challenge. From the new school year onwards, they will take over the community's school kitchens - to be more precise - they will supply the two primary schools and the middle school. Meals in the Ernst-Mach-Gymnasium will continue to be organized by the association.

Soup or salad buffet for students

A real benefit for the community in several ways: You can rely on the quality and popularity of the food. The team, which will be expanded by four people, is well-coordinated and reliable - and also has special ideas for the school children: In addition to the two fixed courses, there will also be a soup or salad buffet every day. “The children should have a choice. “So they can just try it out and then follow up,” says Francesca Marzocca. Costs: The three-course menu costs 6.30 euros, the municipality writes in the press release.

The administration expects that the number of meals will increase significantly - because the legal right to all-day care in schools will come in 2026. In Haar you feel prepared for this with the food you have. “It doesn’t get much better,” says Mayor Andreas Bukowski (CSU). mm
