The 'colombina' is the device carried by a rocket triggered by the holy candle - 'ignition' by Cardinal Giuseppe Betori, archbishop of Florence, inside the Cathedral -, which 'sets fire' to the chariot or rather the firecrackers and fireworks of which it is ' accompanied. Despite the bad weather, with even a little rain, as always Piazza del Duomo was packed with Florentines and tourists for the event: according to what the organizers explained, around 5,000 people in the square.
Starting from the altar of the Cathedral, the 'colombina' reached the chariot of fire, called Brindellone, positioned between the Cathedral and the Baptistery and then returned without any hitch.
Tradition has it that if it manages to return it is a sign of hopelessness and good harvests. As per tradition, the crowd of spectators also received the blessing of Cardinal Betori who went around the entire square and blessed the Brindellone before it was 'lit'. After the Explosion of the Cart the continuation of the mass in the Cathedral, which began in the cathedral churchyard and celebrated by Betori. Among those present were the mayor of Florence Dario Nardella and the Tuscan governor Eugenio Giani.
