Tomatoes, lettuce, kohlrabi – everything from our own garden. You can find out here how you can create your own vegetable patch with little effort and the right location.

There is hardly anything more satisfying than the taste of home-grown vegetables. If the site and soil meet the right conditions, anyone can create a fruitful garden and enjoy their own harvest. With a little thought and planning, this can be achieved even without a green thumb if you follow a few rules.

A small patch of lawn or unused space can quickly be transformed into a mini field, whether it's the size of a towel or stretches the entire width of a fence. Salads, kohlrabi or peas can thrive here. However, it is important to make sure there are no trees or hedges nearby that could compete with the bed for light and water.

For a successful harvest, you should follow a few steps:

  • Choose a suitable location: Most vegetables prefer sunny and wind-protected locations. Cabbage, spinach, peas, leeks and broccoli also tolerate some shade.

  • The soil should be rich in nutrients and humus and loose. Very heavy soil can be made more permeable by adding sand.

  • The bed should be of appropriate size: a lush bed is useless if it is difficult to reach the vegetables when watering and harvesting. Therefore, ideally it should only be around 1.20 meters wide, no more than six meters long and aligned in a north-south direction. Depending on the length, make sure there are enough walkways made of stone slabs or wood chips so that you can water well.

  • Mark the bed outlines with sticks and strings and remove the grass if necessary. Loosen the soil with a digging fork - do not dig too deeply so as not to disturb the soil organisms that improve soil quality. Weeds, roots and stones are removed and the soil is enriched with a layer of compost about 15 centimeters thick.

  • Create a bed border: To keep lawn, weeds and pests away from the bed, you should first insert a lawn edge - preferably made of metal - about 20 centimeters deep. Alternatively or additionally, a border made of stones or wood can be used.

  • If all conditions are met, you can start planting. Make sure you have good bed neighbors, as not all vegetables get along well with each other. A monoculture with only one variety should be avoided as this depletes the soil and provides a larger target for pests and diseases.

  • Water the young plants before planting them in the bed and don't forget to water them sufficiently over the next few weeks.
