In the north of Cantal, the small town of Montboudif has all the makings of a peaceful rural town. A single street of a few hundred meters, a few houses, 200 inhabitants and fields as far as the eye can see. The calm is only disturbed by the arrival of a few visitors. And when a car stops here, there's a good chance that Georges Pompidou had something to do with it.
“It’s thanks to him that our village is known, that’s normal
,” says a retiree with graying hair. She remembers the announcement of the death of the President of the Republic on April 2, 1974. Other residents even remember where they were when they heard the news, as with the assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
“Already fifty years... It made us feel strange in Cantal and especially in Montboudif. It was a bit of our local pride, which represented us in Paris.”
