More than two weeks have passed since the 47-year-old Hagit, a mother of two girls, underwent a routine operation at Assuta Ramat Hay'il Hospital and contracted a virulent bacteria. "I accompanied her through the entire process from the first moment," said Hagit's relative, Meshi (pseudonym) Lavala in her first interview since the tragic event.

"Hagit and I were together all day. We ate and spent time in front of the sea to relax and breathe. We were told to arrive three hours before the operation, there was a delay and she only went in at half past nine in the evening. I waited for the operation to go smoothly until two in the morning. In the morning, I returned to the hospital and saw that something is wrong," Meshi repeated.

According to her, there was no doctor to see Hagit after the operation, and she was the one who warned that something was wrong. "Her speech was very slow, they didn't understand her. I knew she was suffering and in a lot of pain. The nurses did blood tests. Only on Wednesday, two days after the operation, we were told that she had the bacteria, but no one told us that it was from the hospital. After that she arrived The deterioration on Saturday. They put her in surgery because she had a cerebral hemorrhage and since then she hasn't woken up." Meshi says that only after the publication that Basuta reported the bacteria to the Ministry of Health, only then did they call the family and tell them that she was infected with other patients in the contaminated operating room. According to the relative, to this day the hospital does not give them satisfactory answers.

"Where did this bacterium come from and how did it get into Hagit? She was not looked after properly, and she apparently suffered irreversible brain damage," Meshi pointed out. "We were told that there will be an investigative committee that will look into the incident and we are afraid that no one will be held responsible. There are officials in Assuta who told us directly that there was a failure in treatment here and there are officials who are trying to present otherwise," she continued.

This week it was also announced in Vala that the operating room where Hagit and other patients were operated on has returned to function, according to Assuta and the Ministry of Health after it was cleaned and sanitized according to the ministry's instructions, which approved it to return to activity. To this, Meshi said: "I don't understand how they did it, I don't understand. Some things are sublime in my understanding. How the operating room resumed operation before the Ministry of Health's investigation was finished and the source of the infection still hasn't been found, it's beyond me."

Attorney Avi Shmoeli also referred to the sequence of events that led to Hagit's deterioration and said: "At this stage, two weeks after the operation, the family expected to receive clearer answers from Assuta regarding the source of the infection and how it happened that a patient entered a simple operation healthy, became infected with a bacteria, and reached a state of injury In response to their

, officials in Asuta who spoke to Walla said that the results of the inspection committee will be at least three months from now. In Asuta they hear the family's claims and emphasize that they will not hide anything from the family and whatever the results will be, they will be visible to them.

"We are shocked and hurt"

According to them, the purpose of the inspection committee is to know not only the source of the infection, but also how it was caused and how it reached Hagit and other patients, and above all how it will be possible to learn from the incident and prevent it in the future. According to them, this is the most thorough committee that exists in Israel, which also includes external experts from the health field. The members of the committee examine the treatments from the first moment, listen to the families and submit the recommendations.

Regarding the operating room that has returned to function, according to them they received a permit from the Ministry of Health and since those cases there have been zero infections in the operating room. Meshi finds it difficult to describe her mental and physical condition alongside the severe tragedy. "I can say that we are shocked and in pain, it is simply unbelievable that a woman goes in for surgery and leaves on the floor. She has daughters aged 11 and 14 at home, they know the difficult situation and we are all around them strengthening and supporting. It has been two weeks and every day we start the day on a roller coaster And end it with a demon train," she said.

"We are a strong and united family, and as hard as it is for me because I am also a mother of children and a family woman, I do not have the privilege of breaking and falling apart. I have to take care of her daughters and all the things surrounding Hagit's care. We are by her side in bed. Every time someone else comes, her parents are 83 and 89 live far from the hospital and we bring them all the time, it's very difficult, but we really pray for a miracle."

Meshi tells about her family's and her mental health care. "We hired a psychologist who accompanies the family at our expense, no one suggested such a thing, we feel alone. There is indeed a social worker from the hospital, but this is more in the scope of rights that Hagit and the family deserve - it is not treatment."

Meshi described the difficulties: "I feel like the whole world is on my back. We put together the family's chameleon." I haven't been working for two weeks now, the two girls I'm responsible for are with us. They are the most important thing to us. About her relative Hagit and the unknown future she said that: "Hagit is stunning with a sense of humor that is unique to her and also cynical. A mother is one of the most amazing I have ever seen. She provided the girls with everything they ever needed. She is amazing. We are making progress every day, hoping for a miracle."

The Ministry of Health stated: "The return of the operating room to activity was done in coordination with the national unit for the prevention of infections and after the necessary cleaning and disinfection instructions were carried out. It should be noted that since the opening of the operating room there have been no infections in the patients operated on in it."
