Angela Reischl and Tilo Ederer from Dachau have been volunteer helpers on the way to school for 20 years. They tell you why.

Dachau – Angela Reischl has been standing at the traffic lights at Wallach Park in Dachau-Süd for 20 years, helping school children get to school safely. Even though her own four children have long since grown up, the 65-year-old is far from thinking about quitting: “I still want to reach 30,” she reveals with a wink.

Have fun and do something good

But why do you still stand at the traffic lights one or more times a week from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. when you could still be sitting comfortably in bed or at the breakfast table at home? “I enjoy being with the children,” says Angela Reischl, revealing her motivation. The 65-year-old also really enjoys talking to other mothers and grandmothers.

And of course there is another motivation: to be able to do something good. Because the woman from Dachau is not just a helper on the way to school. She volunteers at the Church of the Assumption of Mary, the Dachauer Tafel, the Red Cross clothing store and other organizations. Of conviction. “As a family, we are all socially committed, we really enjoy it,” explains the 65-year-old.

Cohesion in the school journey helper group

What Angela Reischl also really enjoys is the good cohesion in the group of helpers on the way to school: “If you are sick or want to leave spontaneously, that is no problem at all for us!” You can find a replacement via WhatsApp “in just a few minutes”. Joint visits to folk festivals or dinners: The southern school route helpers also meet privately on occasion. After all, they want to “get to know each other,” explains the woman from Dachau.

One of the people she met while doing her volunteer work in recent years is Tilo Ederer. “That’s how we became friends,” says Angela Reischl.

Ederer, also known to the people of Dachau as chairman of the boys' band and department head of the judoka of TSV Dachau 1865, remembers his start as a school helper: "I started back then because the coordinator of the helpers at the time said that I should do it now!" Because he was still traveling a lot for work 20 years ago, he needed reliable representation. And he found it in: Angela Reischl.

Thanks to their volunteer work, the two have been friends for many years and are a “super team,” as Tilo Ederer describes their collaboration. Tilo Ederer also gets along very well with the entire team of around 40 people in Dachau-Süd, which is coordinated by Werner Fischer. Mutual support and representation is a matter of honor in their group.

There is a great need for school helpers

Ederer isn't thinking about quitting either. “Angela Reischl and I have agreed that we will keep going as long as the other person keeps going,” reveals the 65-year-old school transport helper with a wink. Plus, it's still a lot of fun. The fresh air, the chat with children and parents and also the need for helpers on the way to school mean that Tilo Ederer is happy to continue standing on the street early in the morning. “Even if you sometimes get a saying from adults and older students when you draw their attention to misbehavior. “You have to accept a stupid answer,” admits Ederer. But the moments of joy in volunteering, says Ederer, “far outweigh” the bad experiences.
