On the occasion of the premiere of the film 'Disco, Ibiza, Locomía', we spoke with Blanca Suárez and Eva Llorach about how to manage the importance of raising your voice

The classic “Neither sing nor dance, but don't miss it” that will always accompany the legend of Lola Flores has something to do with Locomía, a group that did not need to sing or tune (but it did need to fan) to establish itself as the epitome of the eighties disco music of Spain. The film

Disco, Ibiza, Locomía

(in theaters on May 17) examines the shadows cast by their shoulder pads, because along with friendship and chosen families, it explores the conflicts that dynamited a group that did not know how to manage success. What few know, although the Movistar +

Locomía

documentary was commissioned to highlight her figure before, is that Lurdes Iribar was one of the key pieces of the band as a backup singer and costume designer. We met with Blanca Suárez, who plays Iribar, and with Eva Llorach, who plays the lawyer who tries to reconcile the members of the group, to find out how they manage the aspects and problems that made the band close their fans.

When telling the taxi driver that he was going to interview the actresses from the Locomía film, he shouted: “But in Locomía there were no women!”

Blanca Suárez:

The figure of Lurdes continues to surprise, despite the fact that she was one of the creators of the group, from which she soon left. The business model they were involved in did not fit her and she felt it was not her place. I think they neither did her justice nor received her as she deserved.

Eva Llorach:

I play the mediating lawyer who tries to fix the mess they have. I'm happy with the result, because something very comical has turned out: she is dazzled by them and wants to act modern. In reality, she would have wanted to lead that life; She is the typical lawyer from the eighties and nineties who comes from a well-off and somewhat modern family, but who has not dared to do many things. My goodness: I'm listening to myself and it seems like I have a huge role, right? But you can see a lot, because it runs through all the footage.

Now that he mentions it, his roles, even when they are 'small', always influence the plot, because he plays important characters.

E. Ll.:

I think it's the opposite: the key lies in the way I take each role, and I'm not going to take credit away. In writing, sometimes, when the characters are not very important or have so much weight, they may seem less relevant, but I work on them as if they were the protagonists. I always use characters to learn and work on things that I want to explore, and in this case I wanted to go for comedy. It makes me laugh when they tell me that they always give me cool roles: I take advantage of what they give me.

Lurdes Iribar herself explained to

S Moda

that in the group she acted as a mother, a sister, a friend... Isn't it tiring that women always have to adopt the role of caregivers?

BS:

When a woman decides to do it because she wants to, it's fine with me. The worrying thing is when that role is imposed on her. Her character was much more calm and responsible, and I say this in quotes, than the rest of the group, but she was just as crazy as the time in which she lived. However, she did it from a less flashy and less folkloric place than her companions, and that put her in the position of taking care of others, who ended up putting responsibilities on her that, although Lurdes did not mind when everything was flowing, They made it clear that she was neither his mother, nor his assistant, nor his seamstress.

Ambition and ego finished them off. How are yours doing?

BS:

Pretty good. Ours is a curious profession, because it feeds the ego a lot, but not because one does it, but because others do it and as a result, you believe it. I say it's curious because the next day there may be a twist and you fall into oblivion, but you are left with a well-fed ego. And when you are forgotten... what do you do with that ego? If you pay attention to this, you will find many clues on how to handle yourself and where to position yourself. I identify well which lines not to cross so as not to feed the ego more than necessary.

(At that moment, Eva Llorach rolls up her sleeves and shows a tattoo on her forearm that reads

“ego free”).

E. Ll.:

The ego is always there. I share therapy with a friend and we both got this tattoo. I have always called moments of explosions of happiness “happy attacks,” and my therapist has told me that these moments are “ego-free moments.” They happen when your ego is quiet and suddenly you say: “This is me and this is what gives me happiness.” It is important to find these moments, and even more so if you are an actress, because you compare yourself with everyone. We would all have to do therapy, especially the actors, because sometimes we stay peek-a-boo after each job. I go all the way in and then I have to regain my center and be calm. I'm managing my ego as best I can.

Let's go back to ambition, are they ambitious?

BS:

There are many ways to demonstrate and manage ambition. Having it is good, but not when we talk about the ambition at all costs that some have. I place it in specific lines: if you want new things to happen to you, when you want to continue growing... You have to have a minimum of ambition, but well managed; That doesn't mean stepping on heads.

E. Ll.:

My personal work right now is the most important thing. When I arrived in Madrid, my job ambition was essential, but I have reached an age where I cannot identify with the belief that work is the most important thing for me. Right now I'm working on being well and calm.

The film talks about the disappearance of the taboo, the power of each person claiming and explaining who they are. Do you think that paradoxically today, when we should be freer, it is more difficult to be so?

BS:

It seems that way to me. Much progress has been made in being able to speak and show things that were previously hidden, but if you do not follow a very specific speech, you will be classified. Current discourses are very marked, radical and difficult to follow in certain aspects. I try not to speak out: there is something about making speeches all the time that exhausts me. You are annoyed whether you think something with a “but” or if you don't speak out.

E. Ll.:

I surprise myself by asking myself how I am not going to give my opinion on something. But who cares? Why do I have to give my opinion on everything and have to maintain a public opinion all the time? I am not the president of the nation! I'm an actress!

However, precisely his opinion about the accusations against

Carlos Vermut

, with whom he has worked three times, is especially relevant...

E. Ll.:

I have experienced it with pain. Although I am not going to talk about this specific case, feminism is so important to me that I want to say that I think it is very important that everything related to abuse of power and sexual, physical and psychological abuse be put on the table so that there is a debate and analysis. I believe that one of the fundamental objectives of feminism is to understand what it means to denounce; that men and women understand empathy. Those of us who have had something happen to us, which is 90%, know how difficult it is to raise our voices. Therefore, it is important that people understand the mechanism that leads you to say what has happened to you.

Are we really moving towards safer cinema?

BS:

Things are changing. Although I have not experienced any type of situation in that sense, I consider that my generation views things differently, and this does not mean that we are more submissive. Now the skin is very thin, but the positive part is that there are figures like the intimacy coordinators, which of course did not exist when I started and for which I am grateful. Filming is a relatively hostile environment, and fortunately, now there are things that are very controlled.

Disco, Ibiza, Locomía

is a story full of gray, because it talks about a failure. What is failure for you? And success?

BS:

There are times when I doubt if failure really exists, because when things don't go as you think, I think it encourages others to happen...

E. Ll.:

The answer depends on my mood. Before I would have said that success is having several leading roles, but if I think about it calmly and with a well-placed ego, perhaps it lies in another place, in being calm with yourself and in having the little or much that you need covered. I'm trying to convince myself that success is being calm.

Eva, I saw on the networks that the other day you were reading

Olga Tokarczuk

, who writes that even reality ages by being subject to the same laws as any living organism. How are they holding up over time?

E. Ll.:

Fatal. My image has been registering for 20 years, and you need a lot of therapy to understand that the current ones are your new image. When I see them, I say: “Wow. “Everything is falling!” I am the type of actress who is going to try to age without interventions, something that will take away jobs from me, but will give me others. I refuse to do anything that changes my appearance. I am reconciling with my self. Lately I look very pretty, but when you look good on the inside you look better on the outside. However, it is undeniable that it is difficult to forget about your shell when you are an actress, because you live off of it. One of the therapeutic exercises is to face the mirror every day, look at yourself when you just woke up and try to love yourself, because if you don't love that person in front of the mirror, you won't want them painted either. Then there is the issue of network filters, which eliminate any imperfection: Instagram is evil and the person who invented it is Satan.

BS:

Suddenly, I see the new generations as “the new generations,” and that makes me feel older. I notice a lot of generational leaps, and my head explodes with their speeches, their way of living, their way of dressing... I am 35 years old, and I think it is from here on that you begin to be aware of how quickly time passes and that you are going to get older. In the mirror you see different things, you feel differently… This year they have exclaimed: “Well, you are very good!” That comment had not been made to me before.
