The homeless man who was hit several times in the head with an iron bar by a 16-year-old boy on Saturday evening is in a guarded prognosis with multiple fractures to his head. Hospitalized from the first minutes after the events at the Sant'Andrea hospital in La Spezia, the man, who is 46 years old and Italian, is in serious but stable conditions. The boy who hit him was investigated for attempted murder. There are few certainties about what happened that night in Sarzana. Few certainties and many doubts which were not dispelled by the words given by the boy to the police. It all happened on the night between 30 and 31 March, between midnight and 1 am, in the area around the Sarzana station. The boy is with some friends and goes down an underpass where, by chance, he meets the homeless man in the company of his dog. An argument breaks out between the boy and the man. The reasons are not known.
The fact is that, according to what the boy said, the man put his hand in his pocket. The young man, thinking that he was armed with a knife, picked up a bar that happened to be on the ground and hit him several times in the head and face. Then he would have gone away together with his friends. Someone asks for help and the homeless man is rushed to Sant'Andrea hospital. The boy is tracked down by the Sarzana police not far away. The men from the army call the parents and together they all go to the barracks. Here the boy makes spontaneous statements and says that he took the bar and hit the man for fear that he had a knife.
Once the magistrate on duty at the juvenile court has been informed, the boy returns home: his lawyers haven't seen him yet but they say that the family is destroyed and the boy is locked in his room. The homeless man remains in hospital: in addition to some skull fractures, the CT scan highlighted a subdural hematoma and a small subarachnoid hemorrhage. He has a guarded prognosis but the doctors say his life is not in danger. The Carabinieri carry out investigations that are as accurate as they are delicate in complete confidentiality. The homeless man is well known in Sarzana where many have always seen him together with his dog at the station or in front of the supermarket. The military collects testimonies and acquires city video surveillance footage to understand what really happened on the night of March 30th between the boy and the homeless man.
