A good 60 people helped pull horse “Pini” out of a ditch on Good Friday.

Finsing/Ismaning – A complex animal rescue operation involved three fire departments from the Munich and Erding districts on Good Friday. During a ride in the southern part of the Erdinger Moos, directly behind the district border in the municipality of Ismaning, the nine-year-old horse “Pini” ended up in the so-called White Graben, a drainage ditch. Due to the swampy conditions, it was unable to free itself from its predicament. Finally the fire department was alerted.

Since the site was off the paved road and only one kilometer beyond the district border, both the Ismaning fire department with deputy commander Michael Fischer from the Munich district and the active personnel from Eicherloh and Finsing arrived, the latter with their animal rescue harnesses. A veterinarian was also called in. In addition to rescuing the horse, its young rider also had to be looked after. Firefighters report that she was uninjured, but visibly distraught and worried about her horse.

As was heard from the scene, the forces first tried to pull the horse out of the ditch by hand using slings made from fire hoses. “That usually works quite well, but in this case we needed a plan B,” reports Eicherloh’s commander Dominik Halbritter when asked by our newspaper. The attempt failed, so a truck with a loading crane from the municipality of Ismaning was used.

The lifting straps of the animal rescue harness were pulled under the body of the now noticeably exhausted horse, while at the same time its head had to be constantly kept above water. Thanks to a makeshift bridge made of planks, work could be carried out from both sides of the water.

A good hour after the alarm was raised, the animal was pulled up with the crane and placed on a meadow, assisted by firefighters by hand. Suddenly the horse came to life: Jumping and kicking wildly, it raced back and forth, but was brought under control after a few minutes before going back to its home stable. According to reports, the horse survived the accident without any serious injuries.

The fire brigades - a total of around 60 people were deployed - also moved away again, although the cleaning of vehicles, personnel, clothing and equipment probably took some time.
