After 27 years, Bernhard Simon is resigning from his position as conductor of the Lenggries brass band. He was now bid farewell at the spring concert.

Lenggries – Palm Sunday is a concert Sunday in Lenggries. This year too, the Lenggrieser brass band invited people to the traditional spring concert in the multi-purpose hall. Nevertheless, it was not a concert as usual, because there are changes coming, as music director Hans Proisl announced to the large audience. Kapellmeister Bernhard Simon will resign from his position at the end of the spa concert season. The conductor's long-standing commitment was recognized by his music comrades with an honor and a gift as well as warm words of thanks to Simon's wife Elisabeth. Simon led the band with a lot of passion for a total of 27 years - with an interruption from 2011 to 2019, when Alois Leichmann held the baton. There was another unusual honor: Kaspar Willibald has been an active musician for 65 years. “Even though he was sick several times, he always carried on,” said Proisl in his eulogy about the man who had just turned 84 years old. The two deserving musicians received great applause from the visitors.

Concert program: Journey through different styles

The concert program provided a worthy setting for these extraordinary personalities. In general, it offered the audience a journey through different styles, which the 40-member ensemble completed with verve and enthusiasm. Works such as the march “Blas' Musik in die Welt” by Martin and Stephan Hutter or the “Wirtshauspolka” from the “Weißen Bräuhaus” by Stephan Hutter are always enjoyed by fans of Egerland music. The simplicity of the Tyrolean folk song “Be nice, stay together” brought out the harmony of the voices wonderfully. The “Elisabeth Serenade”, which had developed into a real catchy tune at the time, was no less homely and took us back several decades.

Alois Ostler led the evening

But what would a concert be without Johann Strauss: The “Annen-Polka”, in this case that of Johann Strauß Sohn, which, as Alois Ostler explained as the evening's moderator, is one of the most frequently played Strauss works, invites you with lively motifs usually for dancing - which of course was not planned for the concert in the multi-purpose hall. The overture to the operetta “Leight Cavalry” by Franz von Suppé also contains rhythmic and harmonic parts, which, after a short fanfare at the start, were played by the musicians on stage with nuanced and precise execution.

Simon Jr. shines with solo piece

The highlight of the program and probably also pure tension for the performer, Bernhard Simon Jr. was the solo for trumpet “The Carnival of Venice”. A layperson can only imagine how much breathing and finger technique is necessary to accurately interpret this largely fast-paced piece by Jean-Baptiste Arban with its runs, triplets and jumps. For his outstanding performance, Simon Jr. received the deserved applause. Scottish sounds were delivered by Jaroslav Novak's lively “Bagpipe Polka” - here Hans Lindner and Andreas Kobinger proved to be highly practiced soloists with their clarinets. Variety in the genre was offered by other contributions such as the “Panorama March” and the “Regimental Parade” as well as the concert fantasy “Stephen Foster in concert” and the number “Henry Mancini in Concert.”
