Work on the second construction phase in Gräfelfinger Bahnhofstrasse East is progressing quickly - school holidays and vacation time are irrelevant. Those responsible met on the construction site for a jour fixe on the Tuesday after Easter. Conclusion: Things are going well.

Gräfelfing - The employees of the Strabag pipe laying department from Regensburg are currently in action on the section between Tassilostrasse and Stefanusstrasse that is completely closed to road traffic. The two pipelines for the district heating have already been laid loosely in a trench almost two meters deep on a first section. The steel pipes with an inner diameter of 250 millimeters (including the insulation and protective layer 500 millimeters) are to be welded starting today. This is precision work that requires time and experience – and is strictly controlled. “The inspector with the X-ray machine will be used on Friday,” says Thomas Winkler, project manager from the Gammel Engineering office. Because the weld seams must be tight - for at least 50 years and even when material moves thanks to high temperatures: the hot water from geothermal energy will heat the pipes to 90 degrees after commissioning, and the steel will expand. To ensure that no damage occurs, expansion arches with Styrofoam pads are installed, which allow the material to move to a certain extent.

As part of this work, future house connections are also being planned so that the main line no longer has to be opened afterwards. They each consist of a 50 centimeter short intermediate piece of the large pipe, from which a thinner line branches off.

According to Thomas Winkler, the pipe laying should be finished and the large ditch closed by Pentecost. Then the hour comes for the road builders, this time from the Unterhaching branch of the Strabag company. They will first dig up the road to a considerable extent in order to install the now larger drainage system, which can also cope with heavy rain events. The road will then be rebuilt in layers, the parking spaces will be rebuilt and everything will be freshly asphalted. The street cross-section and the sidewalks with bicycle lanes remain unchanged; pedestrian traffic is not significantly restricted at any time.

Nevertheless, Sabine Vilano, who is in charge of the construction site on behalf of the municipality, has responded to some requests: There is now only a limited parking ban at the junction on Tassilostrasse so that customers can pick up the food they have ordered from the Japanese restaurant. At the junction with Reichartstrasse, the curbs have been made passable for cyclists and wheelchair users with an asphalt wedge. And the entrance from Pasingerstrasse to Stefanusstrasse has been optimized with yellow markings in consultation with the police. Overall, according to Sabine Vilano, complaints about restrictions and diversions through the construction site are very limited. All work should be completed by the start of the summer holidays at the end of July/beginning of August.
