“I fear summer”
. Three words that all justice professionals share today, whether they are magistrates or prison staff. Sébastien Nicolas, secretary general of FO Direction, reveals that there are
“more than 77,200 prisoners”
for 61,359 operational places in France and that in the summer,
“the bar of 80,000 prisoners has a good chance of to be surpassed. “It’s a dramatic and totally unconscious situation
. ”
While the plan to build 15,000 prison places is far from being achieved, it is already obsolete.
The situation will be even more critical in the coming weeks and months. Because, notes Yoann Karar, deputy secretary general of FO Surveillants,
“as the Olympic Games approach, incarcerations are increasing everywhere in France. Added to this are the XXL operations: all these people arrested will have to be put somewhere!”
