At the entrance to the Red Cross campus in Reims, where the two “Coquilles” proudly stand, an architectural ensemble that houses the amphitheatres, Jules questions: “Free telephones for students? It exists ? “It’s a good initiative for those who can’t afford one.” Until now he had not heard of the “Don de giga” operation, in partnership with Fage (
Federation of General Student Associations
) and a telephone operator, launched on March 7 by the Inter-Campus Federation of University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne (Urca).
Its president, Virgile Moulin, underlines its importance: “The Champardennais region is not spared from student precariousness, 19% of students do not have enough to eat. Digital insecurity also adds to food insecurity. It is essential today to have a phone to store lessons or download useful apps for revising. It is also necessary for social connections, particularly for international students who can keep in touch with their families.”

The principle is simple: students can apply online to find out if they are eligible to receive a phone and/or a SIM card valid for two years. “Being on a scholarship, having emergency aid or any other document proving that you are in a digital divide allows you to apply. Then, we make a selection based on the files.”
Around thirty requests have already been received by the Inter-Campus Fédé. But be careful, there won't be something for everyone because the association only has around sixty phones and 200 SIM cards. However, the operation could be repeated next year.
Many initiatives
But the association which also manages a “Kfet” (
cafe
) offering ultra-accessible prices and an AGORAé solidarity grocery store is increasing its actions aimed at students in precarious situations. Last year, nearly 13 tons of food were distributed free of charge. Nearly 400 students benefit each year. Not to mention the installation kits launched in 2021 which allow you to equip yourself with free kitchenware or household linen.
Next step: loaning laptops. For the moment, students can access two computer stations free of charge during opening hours at the Fédé Inter-Campus premises in Reims.
