Because he “recognizes opportunities where others only see problems,” Falstaff magazine has named Christian Harisch Gastro Entrepreneur of the Year 2024. The Tyrolean also had to overcome many obstacles for the Lanserhof Tegernsee on Steinberg. That was ten years ago. Harisch is now moving his central office there.

Marienstein

– Falstaff, the Austrian culinary magazine, recently named Christian Harisch (57) “Gastro Entrepreneur of the Year” in the Vienna City Hall. The entrepreneur runs five hotels in Kitzbühel alone, but he is best known for the exclusive health resorts of the Lanserhof Group. Most recently he made a name for himself with the opening of the Lanserhof Sylt - it is considered the most expensive hotel in Germany. The Lanserhof Tegernsee on the Steinberg near Marienstein also caused a sensation when it was built. Harisch was only allowed to get started after a referendum; the opening was ten years ago this year. “Tegernsee is a happy place,” he says today. Harisch is very pleased about the personal award in Vienna. “It shows once again that health and enjoyment in gourmet quality are not opposites,” he says. The success is only possible thanks to his top team, to whom he would like to thank very much.

As an entrepreneur, Harisch actually wants to take a quick breather in 2024. The new building on Sylt, which opened in 2022, demanded a lot from him and his team. “Everything is very difficult there,” he says. The next goal – a Lanserhof near Marbella – is in our sights together with partners, but Harisch wants to give his expanding company a break without too many challenges: “We are slowing down a bit.”

Radiology practice on hold

This is particularly true for the Lanserhof on the Steinberg. Harisch has put the plan to move a radiology practice into the hill (we reported) on ice for the time being. Likewise, the new construction of the driving range with coaching rooms and fitness area, which has been approved since May 2019. Construction work is underway at the Lanserhof, but it is only a renovation project for the pavilion. “We had problems with water,” reports Harisch.

The fact that the underground radiology practice - the Waakirchner building committee started working on the project in 2022 - still has to wait is mainly due to the company's desire to make the MRI and CT examinations accessible not only to Lanserhof patients, but also to the general public make, proves to be difficult to fulfill. “The German healthcare system is very complicated,” sighs Harisch. In addition, construction prices are currently still very high. Harisch reports that the construction of the radiology practice would currently cost around four million euros: “That’s too expensive for us.”

Relocation of the central office to the Steinberg

While the new building plans rest on the Steinberg, the existing space will be used to make the branch the organizational heart: Harisch is moving the Lanserhof Group's central office from Hamburg to Marienstein. Around 20 employees will be added to the previous 200.

This is precisely why the plans to expand and expand the Margarethenhof Golf Hotel for guests are currently no longer being pursued. “We need a lot of the space ourselves,” explains Harisch. As far as the Margarethenhof hotel-restaurant is concerned, the company even has to make restrictions in view of the cost development. In the current situation, it is hardly possible to cook for twelve hours seven days a week during the season: “We cannot simply pass on price increases of 20 percent to our guests.”

Joy about anniversaries

The entrepreneur acquired the Margarethenhof golf course and the hotel in 2010. At that time the plant was seriously in deficit. In order to create the - much larger - Lanserhof Tegernsee, based on the model of the first Lanserhof in Lans (Innsbruck), which opened in 1984 on the Steinberg, his family, together with Anton Pletzer and Stefan Rutter, invested around 70 million euros in the construction of the new health resort by 2014 three million euros for the renovation of the Margarethenhof.

Business is going well and the Lanserhof Tegernsee has received the highest awards. “Now it’s about good preservation,” says Harisch. In 2024, the company will celebrate two special anniversaries: 40 years of Lanserhof and ten years of Lanserhof Tegernsee. The success of the concept, says Harisch, “makes us very happy.”
