Some of the tables are still set, but the business has been closed for over ten years: the St. Lukas Stuben inn in Bayrischzell is still empty.

Bayrischzell

- Hendl from the charcoal grill, Viennese potpourri, the lavish Rose Monday Ball as well as numerous wedding, family and birthday celebrations: The St. Lukas Stuben on Tiroler Straße in Bayrischzell was a popular meeting place for locals and regular guests. Its heyday lasted for several decades. But with the death of landlord and mayor Gustl Braun in 2000, the end of this era began. His wife Gusti continued to run the traditional inn for a few years, but in 2012 it was finally over. Since then, the building seems to have frozen in place: the name of the Braun couple is still on the doorbell, and the windows are covered in dust. The dining room is still partly set: salt and pepper shakers stand on tablecloths next to plastic flower decorations that never wilt.

“Forgotten Place” comes back to mind in the local council

The “forgotten place” recently came back to mind when Willy Kravanja (non-party) spoke about it under “unforeseen events” at the local council meeting. “The Lukas Stuben was sold a long time ago,” he reported. That's why he spoke to the current owner back in 2017 to see if she wanted to lease it out, and he even suggested a tenant. However, the two did not come to an agreement. The sign is now falling down, “it is now more and more of an eyesore,” emphasized Kravanja. “I think it's terrible when a once great house becomes vacant.” He sees the fact that the community can't do anything about it as a “catastrophe.”

Mayor regrets vacancy

“I feel the same way,” answered Mayor Georg Kittenrainer (CSU). “We are desperately looking for guest beds and living space and have had an empty house in the middle of town for years.” He also contacted the owner “several times,” as Kittenrainer emphasized. “She’s been telling me the same thing for ten years.” Namely, that “it’s their turn, there are several interested tenants and it will soon be rented out.”

Guests and locals complain about “an eyesore”

According to Mayor Georg Kittenrainer, some people have already tried to lease the building directly from the owner. “Because the phone number is in the window.” But to no avail. The community is also receiving more and more reports from guests and locals who say: “Finally do something with it, it’s crazy, it’s an eyesore,” reported Kittenrainer. “It's always a shame and completely incomprehensible why someone buys a house and then doesn't use it.” The mayor also looked back wistfully on the past few days: “What a center it was in Gustl Braun’s time. But what has become of it is shocking.” The future of the building remained open at the meeting. Attempts by our newspaper to reach the owner were also unsuccessful.
