The Worldcoin project, in which people agree for their irises to be scanned in exchange for free cryptocurrency and a digital ID, would violate EU regulations if they came to Italy and thus incur penalties, Italy's privacy authority said it has told the Worldcoin Foundation on Tuesday.
Although Worldcoin's 'orb' scanning devices are not yet functional in Italy, Italian citizens can download the World App via the app store, hand over their personal data and book free Wld tokens.
Worldcoin, which was co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, says that the biometric data it collects is either deleted or stored in encrypted form.
