Pierre Loti, author of “Pêcheur d'Islande” and “Ramuntcho”, has not been taught in middle and high schools in France for a long time. Never mind ! To restore the nobility of this academician crowned with a national funeral, Rochefort (Charente-Maritime) has decided to grant scholarships intended for master's students as well as doctoral students curious enough to look into the work of the famous writer- traveler.
“Students who embark on this path during the year 2024-2025 (and subsequent years if necessary) will have access to the various funds and archives kept at Rochefort. The results of their work will be the subject of a public restitution,” explains the municipality, which will even take out the checkbook to support these volunteers: 1000 euros for master’s students and 2000 euros per year, for three years, for doctoral students.

“Loti, sexy or not? We hope so in any case, assures Caroline Campodarve-Puente, the first deputy from Rochefort. This whimsical character does not leave you indifferent. Pierre Loti has so many facets that he can interest and question young people. »
After celebrating the traveler, Rochefort thus calls for rediscovering the writer by opening up to scientific work. “History, literature but also sociology and political science: Loti’s work is vast and cuts across many fields of study,” believes Caroline Campodarve-Puente. The municipality has arrested several of them. Master’s students will be able to look into “the political convictions of Pierre Loti”. Doctoral students will be invited to work on “Pierre Loti’s aesthetic research and taste for decor”, and in particular on his taste for dilapidation and the past or even his dandyism.
