Despite the ammunition residue, the Ukrainian army successfully repelled persistent Russian attacks. Most recently on the Dnipro River - Ukraine wants to continue to hold its position there.

Orikhiv – The Ukrainian army is coming under increasing pressure at the front due to increasingly scarce ammunition. A US aid package worth billions is still stuck in Congress, and the EU was also unable to keep promises to deliver artillery shells by the end of March. Nevertheless, Ukraine is now reporting heavy losses on the Russian side. According to their own statements, the Ukrainian armed forces were able to repel several attacks on the Dnipro and defend their position there.

Even more than two years after the start of the Ukraine war, Russian troops continue to try to advance on various fronts in Ukraine. This is also the case on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River. As the South Ukrainian Defense Forces recently announced on Telegram, fighting between Ukrainian and Russian ground troops there is ongoing. Russia carried out five attacks in the Orikhiv region within 24 hours. Three of them near the village of Robotyne and two near Staromaiorske.

Fighting on the Dnipro continues – Ukraine can successfully defend itself against Russian attacks

According to the article, the Ukrainian armed forces were able to carry out successful counterattacks in two attempted attacks on the left, eastern bank of the Dnipro. Russia's army moved back to its original positions "without the use of armored vehicles and with significant losses." The areas near the Dnipro River have been military hotspots since the beginning of the war. This is because the shortest route to Russian-occupied Crimea is via the Kherson Oblast on the eastern bank. Ukrainian forces were able to recapture the western part of the oblast and the large city of Kherson between September and November 2022. However, large parts east of the river remained occupied and the fight for the strategically good position continues.

A Facebook post from the Ukrainian army said Russia lost a total of 50 weapons and military vehicles in counterattacks in the Orikhiv and Kherson regions. Within 24 hours, 141 Russian soldiers died in these two areas alone.

Ukraine reports 141 Russian soldiers killed after counterattack: numbers difficult to verify during war

Figures on losses of military equipment and casualties in the Ukraine war are difficult to verify. Experts assume that information about victims on the opposing side, whether from Moscow or Kiev, is usually exaggerated. While information about your own losses can often be lower than reality. Most recently, Ukraine spoke of a total of 442,170 fallen troops on the Russian side since the start of the Ukrainian war. The successes on the Ukrainian side recently approached three, for Russia, bleak milestones.

“To hold the position”: Ukraine is relying on drones in addition to artillery fire in the war against Russia

The conditions for the soldiers on the Kherson front are considered catastrophic. However, the South Ukrainian Defense Forces said on Telegram that the soldiers would continue to take comprehensive measures to hold their positions and strengthen their presence in the contested areas. Measures include artillery fire and the use of various attack drones that drop fragmentation ammunition on Russian troops and vehicles.

The fight against the Russian invasion with drones has proven successful for Ukraine in recent months. This modern type of warfare has one main advantage for the armed forces: remote-controlled systems can rescue soldiers from dangerous situations. A brigade of the Ukrainian army recently demonstrated what an attack by kamikaze drones can look like. A rare video shows how nothing was left of a Russian grenade launcher robot after an attack with a comparatively tiny drone.
