In the corridors of the Ville-Évrard hospital in Neuilly-sur-Marne (Seine-Saint-Denis), Pierre Van den Berg, affable smile, dressed in a white coat, interacts with everyone, patients and caregivers . This 32-year-old former librarian, suffering from a psychiatric pathology, is a peer health mediator (MSP) within the psychiatric hospital which serves two-thirds of Seine-Saint-Denis. By his simple presence, he embodies the possibility of recovery.
Since the creation of training in 2012 at the University of Paris VIII - Saint-Denis, around a hundred graduates have been hired in hospitals or medico-social structures specializing in mental health. The Île-de-France Regional Health Agency (ARS) wants to develop this innovative practice, acclaimed by the World Health Organization (WHO), and finances the training and hiring of MSPs.
