Italy has "a potential development of agricultural biomethane of 6.5 billion cubic meters by 2030, alongside the potential for the continuation of electricity production from biogas". This was stated by Piero Gattoni, President of the Italian Biogas Consortium (Cib), in a hearing on the Pniec (the national energy plan) before the Environment and Productive Activities Commissions of the Chamber.

The current Pniec was judged by Gattoni to be "improved compared to the 2019 forecasts, but still prudential regarding the production potential of our country. In particular, the objectives of biogas production in cogeneration should be better defined, which are mainly linked to the existing share of plants that will not be able to convert to biomethane. The production of thermal electricity from biogas is in fact strategic for the greening of the programmability of the electricity grid and could also be included in the development of renewable energy communities".

"With this in mind - added Gattoni - it is necessary to intervene within the Plan to increase the potential in the electricity sector, also considering the support of all the plants which will remain operational with an estimated power of around 500Mw, capable of providing a concrete response to the renewable energy demand In this sense, we believe that Arera's resolution on the guaranteed minimum prices for biogas plants can no longer be postponed, as we also had the opportunity to underline to Minister Pichetto Fratin".
