The renovation of the Miesbach monastery is 2.7 million euros more expensive than planned. One reason for this is the increased construction costs because the project was postponed for too long. A comment from Merkur editor Dieter Dorby.
It was clear that the renovation of the monastery would be expensive. As early as 2012, architect Hans Meier warned against touching the middle section - the nasty surprises were too unpredictable. But that couldn't be avoided. The semi-ruin has now been completely renovated and the result is impressive. For around 5.4 million euros including the purchase less all subsidies, the city received a children's home plus three apartments. The monastery was preserved - as desired during the security purchase in 2010 - instead of sacrificing it for apartments.

District architect explains the expensive monastery in Miesbach
The high costs are not due to monument protection, but rather to the poor building structure and the fact that the city council likes to postpone expensive projects for decades. People regularly ignore the fact that the costs are not decreasing - on the contrary. Monasteries, bathrooms, streets, schools, childcare: Over the years, an investment backlog has arisen, which is now being countered with the risk of over-indebtedness. It is clear that the investment peak must be followed by a strict consolidation phase. The fact that it must be implemented consistently is the prerequisite for being more able to act later than in previous years.
