The European Space Agency (ESA) is working on a chatbot to provide information on Earth observation. The artificial intelligence software will not be based on information collected online and used to train models like ChatGpt, but scientifically validated material will be used.
"Earth observation generates large volumes of vital data every day, but it is difficult for humans alone to get the maximum value from such data - explains ESA - Fortunately, artificial intelligence helps interact with such large data and complex, identifying key characteristics". 'Can you give me a highly accurate classification map of crops in Kenya?' or 'Are the buildings on my street collapsing?': these are some of the questions that can be asked to the ESA chatbot which will be developed together with partners in the fields of space, information technology and meteorology.
This is not the first time that the European Space Agency has used AI for its project. For example, the SaferPlaces AI tool that creates flood maps was used for damage assessment activities during last year's floods in Emilia-Romagna.
