Many believed it was an April Fool's joke. But Stefan Raab is probably drawn back into the public eye. In September he wants to box against an opponent who has already defeated him twice.

Düsseldorf/Karlsruhe - Almost ten years after Stefan Raab's screen farewell, everything points to his return to the spotlight - tickets are being sold for an exhibition boxing match with him. At midday, tickets for “The Final Fight” against ex-professional boxer Regina Halmich on September 14th in Düsseldorf’s PSD Bank Dome were announced on the website of the service provider Eventim.

Halmich had previously confirmed an announcement from Raab in a dpa interview. Because his video was published on Instagram on April 1st, there were doubts about the event.

Halmich: “I’ll thwart his plans”

The former TV presenter (57, “TV total”) has already suffered two defeats in exhibition fights against the ex-professional boxer Halmich (47) from Karlsruhe in 2001 and 2007. “In the first two fights I showed him what to do and even broke his nose,” remembered Halmich. “I think he might be speculating now that I'm not as fit anymore and that he now has a better chance of winning against me. But I have to say, I’m going to put a stop to him.”

Raab, who is one of Germany's most important television producers with show ideas like "TV total" and has been in the business since the 1990s, largely withdrew from the public eye in 2015 and has been working behind the scenes ever since. In 2018 he appeared in a stage show in Cologne, but it was not broadcast on television.

Confirmation by Halmich

“Yes, you could actually think that it’s an April Fool’s joke, but I’ve already explained on my Instagram page: It’s actually reality,” Halmich told the German Press Agency. “I really got this request as to whether I could imagine taking part in this third show fight, this duel, again.”

“After long and careful consideration,” she “decided that I would do it again,” said Halmich. The professional boxer said that she would of course train and get back into the boxing ring fit. “So, clearly, it’s a show fight. I'm no longer a professional. But people definitely don't want to see the high art of boxing, they want good entertainment and I can promise that it will be great." The ticket quotas activated on Tuesday ranged between 81.50 euros and 197.50 euros.

Video on Instagram channel caused a surprise

A video surprisingly appeared on Raab's Instagram channel on Good Friday, the second post on his official channel since 2018. In the video, he gave his former show intern Elton (53) the task of collecting nine million followers for his Instagram profile in three days, then he would return as an influencer. Many observers assumed it was an April Fool's joke. The duo clearly missed this mark.

In another video on Monday, the new edition of the boxing match against Halmich was announced. Raab was mostly shown from behind. His body was only visible for a brief moment, and it appeared to be very overweight, obviously distorted by trickery. The entertainer wore a baseball cap with the inscription “NWSDWH” on his head. The abbreviation was not explained, but it brings back memories of previous Raab events such as the casting show “SSDSGPS” (“Stefan is looking for the Super Grand Prix Star”). dpa
