Istanbul - One day after the fire disaster in an Istanbul club that left 29 dead, investigations into the cause are continuing. Nine people have been arrested so far, including the club operator and those responsible for the renovation, the state news agency Anadolu reported on Wednesday.

A fire broke out in the premises of an Istanbul nightclub around lunchtime on Tuesday. According to the provincial administration, the fire started in connection with construction work in the building.

Meanwhile, the district government in Besiktas announced that the renovation had taken place without permission, as the newspaper “Sözcü” reported.

The club is located in the basement of a high-rise building in the Besiktas district of Istanbul. The TRT broadcaster announced the names of those killed. Most of the bodies have already been handed over to the families. Why they were unable to save themselves from the fire is the subject of investigations.

The Hurriyet newspaper quoted the building's manager as saying that the fire was probably caused by the explosion of an oxygen cylinder near the exit. The people inside were probably suffocated. Residents of the building had been complaining about the club in the basement for a long time, she told the newspaper. dpa
