Framed by two sections of mountain covered in vegetation, the RD1212 plunges into the Arly gorges. It runs along the river and passes from one bank to the other, alternating between shade and sun. It then winds at the foot of the cliffs, before rushing under a tunnel, one of the many which punctuate this route between Ugine, in Savoie, and the Val d'Arly, gateway to Haute-Savoie, the Megève and Chamonix resort. For 12 km, anti-landslide fences, retaining walls, tunnels and avalanche barriers, these semi-open structures protecting the roadway, follow one another along the road.
So many facilities have earned this route, which is very popular with tourists and locals, the reputation of being among the most expensive roads in France.
“This is surely not completely false,”
observes Olivier Thévenet, vice-president of the Savoie department, responsible for infrastructure.
It is a route that is both strategic and very expensive.”
