Insect cocoon, Peruvian round flute or tarantula eggs? A mysterious discovery in Uelzen, Lower Saxony, is puzzling Facebook users.

Uelzen – Sometimes you come across strange finds while taking a walk in the forest, clearing out the cellar or working in the garden. And sometimes it's not even entirely clear what exactly it is. A woman from the town of Bankewitz in the Uelzen area in Lower Saxony may have had a similar experience.

The woman discovered an extremely strange structure in a children's toy that had been under a construction trailer for years. His enigmatically irregular shape and overall enigmatic external appearance prompted the finder to send photos of him to the well-known criminal biologist Dr. Mark Benecke to forward.

Dr. Benecke then spoke up on Easter Monday with a post on the social media Facebook. The forensic scientist attached two photos of the mysterious structure that had been forwarded to him by the astonished finder.

“Maybe it’s something for the Facebook community,” is how the criminal biologist quotes the woman’s closing words of greeting after a sentence about the location of the discovery.

The two photos show the object about the size of a table tennis ball lying in the palm of the finder's hand. You can see a structure that suggests that it is of natural origin due to its knob-like or spike-like surface and its greenish color.

And indeed: On Facebook, the guesswork among platform users immediately begins as to what the strange structure could represent. And what origin it is. Some of them are thrilled by the photos of the strange find - others are surprised and even perplexed. One user even commented that the object shown was a prime example of what trypophobics fear.

Trypophobia is commonly thought of as a feeling of fear or disgust of or towards patterns of holes or bubbles. And as is well known, these occur in nature in many variations. However, trypophobia is not a recognized anxiety disorder, so in professional circles it is seen more as an aversion. However, as a trypophobic, the user would have liked a corresponding trigger warning, she emphasizes.

Peruvian round flute or tarantula eggs? Nothing like that, say others

While many users are wondering what the mysterious find could be - for example, "a Peruvian round flute" - other users are already certain that it is a cocoon from which the butterflies of the genus so-called sloe brushmoths later emerge. And in fact, the knob-like surface of the structure is actually identically close to photographs of the eggs of blackthorn moths.

“No matter what, let it live!” warns another user. And adds that structures like the one in question should better be returned to where they were found. (fh)
