An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 was felt tonight (Wednesday) in the capital of Taiwan, Taipei, knocking out electricity in several areas of the city. Also, the earthquake led to a tsunami warning in the islands of southern Japan and the Philippines. This is the strongest earthquake felt on the island in 25 years.
Taiwan's weather director said the epicenter was off the east coast of the island. According to Reuters, the tremor was felt as far away as Shanghai in China. The Taiwan TV station showed several buildings collapsing following the earthquake. The media reported on how many people were trapped.

At the same time in Japan, an evacuation advisory was issued for those living in the southern prefecture of Okinawa for fear of tsunami waves. Tsunami waves up to three meters high are now expected to hit large swaths of the southwest coast of Japan.
