In mid-January of this year, the founders of Artifact announced the closure of the service. The app, designed and developed by two Instagram exes, allowed users to receive news suggestions via artificial intelligence. Artifact will not close but will be integrated into Yahoo News, the American group that has just acquired it. Artifact's mission was focused on displaying relevant stories to subscribers through artificial intelligence, using proprietary technology to deliver personalized news and experiences.
"Yahoo was one of the first to combine humans and algorithms to organize news," said Kat Downs Mulder, general manager of Yahoo News in an official announcement. “The landscape of machine learning and personalization has changed dramatically, and Artifact has innovated the industry with its technology. We are excited to continue to grow the project and advance the goal of being a trusted aggregator in a challenging time ". The proponents of Artifact are Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, two former co-founders of Instagram, who will advise Yahoo during the handover. Artifact debuted in January last year and gained traction thanks to its robust discovery system that surfaced stories that users overall wanted to read. The app aimed to improve its personalized news feed over time, incorporating some AI-powered features like news summaries. However, it didn't take off and the team announced its closure twelve months after launch. Yahoo previously acquired an app that used artificial intelligence to summarize news, Summly, more than a decade ago, integrating the technology into News and other products.
