A series of earthquakes has shaken the region of the southern Adriatic coast. The epicenters were in Montenegro, but the earthquakes were particularly felt in Croatia.

Nikšić/Dubrovnik - An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 on the Richter scale was registered this Wednesday at 12.40 p.m. in the Montenegrin hinterland of the Croatian tourist metropolis of Dubrovnik. The epicenter was near Nikšić (Montenegro), said the European Mediterranean Seismological Institute (EMSC).

The earth's crust moved at a depth of ten kilometers

According to the Italian Seismological Institute, the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the earthquake was recorded 32 kilometers northwest of Nikšić at a depth of ten kilometers.

The previous evening there had been a magnitude 4.3 earthquake at 9:07 p.m. in the region near the Bosnian border, followed by another magnitude 3.2 earthquake at 9:23 p.m. The latest impact, in particular, was felt throughout the region, especially in Croatia.

Eyewitnesses report: “It was terrible” – “a catastrophe”

“Something like a noise and then a shock that made everything vibrate,” reports a user on the EMSC earthquake platform. “I felt it in the Sheraton Dubrovnik, a slight tremor,” writes another user. “Really shaken,” said a user from the Croatian coastal town of Srebreno, nine kilometers northwest of Dubrovnik. “Short but violent,” wrote another witness to the quake from the Croatian beach village of Kupari, ten kilometers southeast of the port city.

The earthquake was also felt in the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro. “Stronger than last night,” it said. It was also felt in Bosnia: “It shook very strongly, it lasted about ten seconds,” said a user from the town of Bileća. “A catastrophe,” reports a user from Gacko, Bosnia. “It was terrible,” said a user from the same town, just 20 kilometers from the epicenter.

Quake in Croatia and Montenegro: Earth on the Balkan Peninsula does not calm down

There were initially no reports of damage. “Based on the numerical model of the change in intensity with distance in this region, the magnitude of the earthquake and the depth of the hypocenter, this earthquake could have caused little material damage in the epicentral area,” the Institute of Hydrometeorology and Seismology of Montenegro said.

Just during Holy Week, several earthquakes shook the Croatian Adriatic coast. A week earlier, the earth also shook in Montenegro with a magnitude of 5.3. There was talk of minor damage here. At the end of February, a sea earthquake shook the Adriatic coasts of Croatia and Italy. The cause of the tectonic earthquakes is the movement of the Adriatic plate, which is pushing under the Eurasian plate and folding the mountains of the Balkans. This is also the cause of the formation of the Alps.
