Horst Lichter is known for his honest opinions on TV. In “Cash for Rares” he comments on the background of a “Barbie” doll with a shake of his head and incomprehension. What's behind it.

Cologne – In a “Barbie” discussion on the ZDF show “Bares für Rares”, presenter Horst Lichter (62) can only shake his head when he learns about the history of the doll for sale. An expert in the group knew her stuff and amazed the moderator.

“Bares für Rares” has a cult following because of the team around Horst Lichter

The ZDF program has been broadcast since 2013 and is considered one of the most successful afternoon programs there. Not least thanks to the wit of presenter and TV chef Horst Lichter as well as the cult status of the dealers. Bayer Ludwig “Lucki” Hofmaier (82) was one of the most popular experts among “Cash for Rares” viewers. The German TV Nation wants to know what their fellow citizens are hiding in the basement and perhaps also what you can make money from your own forgotten dust eaters. In 2018 the show received the Golden Camera and in 2019 the German Television Prize.

The exciting thing about the concept of “Cash for Rares” is the uncertain outcome. Some sellers come with full confidence in their item and then receive devastatingly low estimates from the experts. Others don't even know how valuable the treasures are before they are allowed into the dealer's room where the exhibits are being auctioned. Even despite damage, a “Cash for Rares” participant was recently able to get three times the estimated value of the expertise.

Horst Lichter shows incomprehension at “Cash for Rares”

In the episode from April 3, 2024, two candidates from Koblenz are guests who want to sell a rare figure from the “Barbie” series. Thanks to the film, which was released in 2023, the toy character is on everyone's lips again; in March 2024, more than 1,000 “Barbie” dolls were traded at a swap meet in Bavaria. What the ladies found very well preserved when they built the house in the attic is not a blonde with a narrow waist and a voluptuous stem, as we have known since it was published in 1959. It is a male doll dressed in casual casual clothing, shorts, striped shirt and open-toed sandals.

Bianca Berding (47), an expert in the group, knows her stuff and explains to the others which model it is. "Allan" was the best friend of Ken, the male counterpart of "Barbie". Ken was published in 1961, Allan in 1964. The art historian knows that it was a failure for the production company Mattel, even though Ken's things also fit Allan. The fact that this was exactly the reason for discontinuing the figure shocked moderator Horst Lichter. In 1966, Mattel discontinued the friend due to rumors that Allan and Ken were a gay couple because of the interchangeable clothing.

“Cash for Rares” Candidates Get More Than Estimated for Doll on “Cash for Rares”

The irritation can be clearly seen on Lichter's face. The Westphalian groans in annoyance: “What nonsense.” That didn't fit into the conservative world of the USA at the time, explains Berding. In 1991, Allan had another revival as Mitch's husband, unfortunately without success. The original purchase price in 1964 was 12.75 German marks. The doll was one of the first in production, which can be proven by the embossing. With the release of the film, the value of the dolls increased again.

However, since “Allan” was still published in high circulation, expert Bianca Berding does not estimate the value to be the 300 euros desired by the candidates. However, the experts in the dealer room are more enthusiastic than expected: instead of the estimated 100 to 150 euros, the owners receive an impressive 200 euros for the exchange. The sale of a figure from “ET” recently showed that a real argument can break out between the experts at “Cash for Rares”.
