Highlights: AfD is seeking approval for the U-Committee. No parliamentarian from the other four factions of the CDU, SPD, Greens and FDP has so far signaled their approval. At least 27 votes in the state parliament are required to set up the committee. The AfD won 28 seats in the election. But the group now only has 26 members. The largest opposition faction in Hesse wants to work on the fight against Corona. Because she lacks a voice within her own ranks for an investigative committee, she turns to the competition.

Wiesbaden - The Hessian AfD opposition in the state parliament sent an email to all 133 parliamentarians on Thursday seeking approval for a Corona investigative committee. A spokesman for the AfD faction told the German Press Agency.

Shortly after the state elections in October, in which the right-wing populist party became the strongest opposition faction in the Hesse parliament, it announced that it would set up a committee of inquiry into the former Corona policy in the state.

No parliamentarian from the other four factions of the CDU, SPD, Greens and FDP has so far signaled their approval. At least 27 votes in the state parliament are required to set up the committee. The AfD won 28 seats in the election. But the group now only has 26 members.

She didn't even admit MP Sascha Herr after the election, citing contacts with neo-Nazis, which he himself denied. Parliamentarian Dirk Gaw, in turn, left the AfD in March because it had become too radical for him. Both politicians are currently the only two non-attached MPs in the Wiesbaden state parliament.

Gaw told the dpa on Thursday that he would not vote for a committee of inquiry. He sat on both such committees in the last electoral term and fears too many party tactics in a Corona investigative committee. He could imagine a study commission to examine the pandemic measures.

The second non-attached MP Mr could not be reached for comment on Thursday. According to Hessischer Rundfunk, he spoke out in favor of a Corona committee in March. With him, the AfD parliamentary group could get the necessary 27 votes for this.

But according to the state parliament, he would have to sign the corresponding application before a vote in the plenary session. According to an AfD parliamentary group spokesman, there was and is no agreement with Sascha Herr. At the same time, however, the spokesman did not rule out that the AfD would accept a signature from Herr if he offered it on his own initiative after reading the circular.

The AfD parliamentary group wants to submit the proposal for a subcommittee to the state parliament in May. “Reappraisal of the measures to combat the corona pandemic is more important than party political interests. It is our responsibility as representatives of the people to check whether the measures were proportionate and what consequences can be derived from them for the future,” says the AfD circular email to all MPs, which the dpa has received. “Support us in making this review possible and join our application.”

According to the parliamentary group spokesman, the AfD expects that the first parliamentary investigative committee of the new electoral term in Hesse could start in the second half of the year.

It was reported from the other factions on Thursday evening that the AfD could be trying to use a transparent trick with its circular email in order to get Sascha Herr's necessary signature. dpa
