Kyiv is running out of ammunition. Nevertheless, Ukraine is now revealing three milestones in terms of casualties in Putin's military in the war against Russia. Moscow remains silent about its own number of victims.
Kiev – The Ukrainian armed forces are running out of ammunition in the Ukraine war that has been ongoing since 2022. While US military aid continues to be blocked by Republicans in Congress, the EU also failed to deliver the promised one million shots to the country attacked by Putin. But despite a shortage of ammunition, Ukraine is now reporting: Russian losses in the war are quickly approaching three new milestones.
Figures difficult to verify: Ukraine reports 640 Russian soldiers killed in 24 hours
Since Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine began more than two years ago, exact numbers of soldiers and civilians killed have been difficult to determine. Both Moscow and Kiev rarely make public information about their own victims in the conflict. If so, they are often difficult to independently verify. Experts assume that the two countries exaggerate their opponents' casualties and understate their own casualties.

In addition, Putin's military also lost 15 tanks within these 24 hours. According to Ukrainian information, this means a loss of a total of 7,000 tanks and almost 15,000 vehicles and tankers. The latter are primarily needed to keep tanks in operation. The extent to which these three milestones correspond to reality cannot be independently verified. A request to the Russian Defense Ministry from the news portal remained unanswered. Ukraine repeatedly reports successes in the fight against the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The Ukrainian Navy claims to have already eliminated a third of this.
Nick Reynolds, from the British think tank Royal United Services Institute, sees Russia's casualty figures published by Ukraine as "entirely plausible". However, missing soldiers and those who did not die in combat-related circumstances should also be taken into account. At the beginning of March, the British government estimated total losses on the Russian side at more than 335,000.

Russia recently announced that Ukraine had lost 15,650 tanks and other armored vehicles since the start of the war. Russia's defense minister last gave casualty figures at the end of 2023, when, according to Russian state media, he spoke of around 383,000 deaths on the Ukrainian side. Ukrainian President Zelensky said in February 2024 that Russia's numbers were wrong. Around 31,000 soldiers have died in the war against Russia since the first attack two years ago.
Kiev recently warned of a new offensive by Russia and that it would have to withdraw without US military aid. The lack of ammunition is particularly noticeable at the front, said Zelensky. A withdrawal could mean a shorter front line. Russia could then advance into the larger cities in the Ukraine war and inflict further casualties, both military and civilian.
