When it comes to basic child welfare, there is once again disagreement at the traffic lights. Juso boss Turmer sees the blame on the FDP - and dishes it out heartily.
Berlin – The traffic light coalition is now notorious for its internal coalition disputes. When it comes to the issue of payment cards for asylum seekers, members of the FDP and SPD accuse the Greens of blocking the Bundestag. In the debate about the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, the FDP and the Greens were again upset about the hesitant positions of Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich. There is now also disagreement on the subject of basic child security. Harsh criticism comes from the SPD's youth organization.

clear words against the members of the FDP. The harsh accusation: the liberals are not interested in poor children. The latest statements from the ranks of the Free Democrats show “the true face of the FDP in combating child poverty,” said Türmer. “More than one in five children in Germany lives in poverty. The FDP doesn’t care about these children,” he accuses Finance Minister Christian Lindner’s party.
Basic child welfare is considered one of the federal government's central social policy reform projects. It was previously planned that a corresponding law would come into force in 2025. Many details regarding the implementation of basic child security are still open, which is why the schedule is also being questioned within the traffic light coalition. Further delays in basic child welfare are indicated by renewed discussions within the coalition.
Traffic light clinch over basic child welfare – pause demands for FDP “completely unrealistic”
On Wednesday, the FDP accused Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) of still not having presented a negotiable proposal. From the perspective of the Free Democrats, further negotiations therefore do not make sense. The SPD and the Greens objected vehemently - and warned the FDP not to back away from agreements that had already been made in the coalition.
The deputy FDP parliamentary group leader Christoph Meyer saw the talks within the coalition at a dead end. “Only she knows why the family minister is clinging to illusory demands that cannot be implemented,” he told the

news agency . The FDP's criticism is primarily sparked by Paus's plan to create 5,000 new administrative jobs in order to pay out the planned basic child benefits. This is “completely unrealistic,” emphasized Meyer.

A central element of basic child protection is that authorities should proactively approach “potential claimants to apply for the benefit”. This means that the services could be actively offered and would not just be limited to demand. According to estimates by the Family Ministry from 2023, the child allowance in its current form only reaches 35 percent of eligible children. That should change with the reform.
As part of basic child security, child benefit or child allowance should, among other things, be bundled into one benefit. The traffic light government wants to combat child poverty more effectively. In the coalition, the Greens in particular campaigned for basic child welfare.
